    Default Can't receive emails

Just purchased a new computer to replace my old bomb that died.
I'm running Windows7 and had Office Professional installed giving me Outlook 2013.

I'll swear everything is set up properly but can't receive emails, have to retrieve them from my Bigpond inbox. All the settings check out when tested, even the computer supplier checked my details, saying everything's sweet.

Q1. What else can I try?

Q2. I can access old files off my former hard drive and my question is, can I retrieve all my old email contacts, addresses etc and transfer them to my new computer?

This data transfer was supposed to have been done, but nothing shows up in Outlook 2013. Is there a setting I've missed?

Just love the new computer, it's lightning fast compared to my 8 year old bomb running XP.

    All fixes greatly received.

I suggest you try sign into your webmail account through Bigpond ASAP if that doesn't work ring them ASAP. I had this trouble recently to find out some how my BP account was being used as spam and had been blacklisted and locked.

    Ken,

As you can still access your old computer, go to Documents & settings folder and do a search for *.pst. This is the data file of Outlook.

Also on your new Win7 machine open Outlook, select Files>Data file management, select Data file tab in the dialog box that opens, this should show you the location of Outlooks current location of it's data files. This location will be similar to what you should have found in the search on your old XP box.

Rename the extension part of the pst files to something like *.old, after you have shut down Outlook. Copy the files from the XP box to our new Win7 box, same location as indicated above. Restart Outlook and all the info from your XP box should be there.

    Ken,

Again select Tools>Account settings this will open the same dialog box as before but on the email tab, select your email account and then select the repair button, this will open a new dialog box follow the instructions and it will send a email from your machine to your email address and then try to retrieve it from the bigpond server. Hopefully this will set everything correctly and you should be in business. If you are getting error messages when Outlook is trying to download your emails, you will have to do a search on the internet for fixes.

    Hope this helps!

Ken, I came over to your place with a password sniffer for your old computer a couple of years ago when you were going desktop to laptop or vice versa, or changing modems or something. We printed out the details from the prior computer and plugged them into whatever had been upgraded and it worked.

At some stage the ADSL modem was involved and we needed to set the password for that, and the primary mail account with bigpond will have the same password as the modem. Look for something printed out relating to the modem password. From memory, there were about 3 possible passwords that might have been used and the modem and mail account used the least likely one of the set. Also remeber that bigpond uses a variety of mail servers with different domains (bigpond.com, bigpond.com.au, and others) and they are not interchangable, so you must use the one you are subscribed to.

If all else fails, and you still have the original or intermediate computers in usable (for outlook) condition, I could bring the sniffers back and try again for you.

    Default All fixed

Gentlemen, thank you for all input. I sent an email to Bigpond who responded this evening. They suggested I try for incoming server pop3.live.com and leave outgoing server at mail.bigpond.com

Initially this did not test ok indicating a wrong password. After trying several other passwords, I finally cracked it.

Mate, there's nothing more demoralising than going to the letter box and there's no mail, unless it's a bill.

I'm now complete again and happy. All I have to do now is recover all my contacts from my old hard drive and find a copy of Autocad that's compatable with Windows 7. My genuine Acad R14 won't install on my new computer, apparently it's too old.

    Any ideas?

Windows 7 comes with the ability to set up virtual machines. You could set up a virtual xp machine, and install/run R14 on it.

Default How do you do it?

    Chrisb,

I'm a dummy when it comes to computers, in fact a lot of other things as well.

If you have time, please explain how I set up Windows7 to pretend to be XP.

Another alternative I thought of was to get into the bios where I have a choice to fire up Windows7 or fire up my old hard drive which runs XP and has my working version of Autocad R14 on it.

I have my old hard drive set up in a case with a usb connection so it becomes another drive.

    Is changing the bios difficult?

    Ken
