chrome remote desktop - Brilliant
I've got chrome remote desktop working on my Aldi tablet and its controlling my PC.
Fine - seems to work okay after first try. Quite chuffed.
Am worried about data useage - does anybody know know whether or not all the data flows into the internet and then back again or does it simply flow from PC to wifi router to tablet after the initial login is verified over the net via google account ? Have got a very expensive and very limited data plan due to awkward location in hillbillyland.
Why bother ?
Have been told to keep my foot elevated for most of the day and using the tablet as a "remote input device" for the computer whilst still being able to look at the big screen allows this to be done quite comfortably.
Whats your favourite handy little data useage meters I could install to check whats happening ? I've got wireshark installed but its horribly complicated and difficult to understand all the options and I dont know how to tell difference between internet data and LAN data
This will also be REALLY handy for when Mum phones me and tries to get me to solve computer issues over the phone - now I can do a remote login to her computer and fix things easily. That would definitely be over the internet rather than local.

If your remoting to your pc from your tablet then its just local by using an RDP compliant protocol over port 3389, this is all local so it goes from your tablet to the router which then passes it to your desktop. Once connected and your controlling your pc and you go outbound over the internet then its your pc using the internet not the tablet.
So yeah as soon as you fix your mums pc it will be over the net but as for just you browsing or using your pc from the tablet thats only local and shouldnt effect your internet usage at all.
As for usge meters you can try going to your ISP's website, i am with internode and they have a monthly usage meter app (MUM) that you can install or even view by logging into their webpage. if your after a host based traffic analysis then wireshark will only be handy if you want to look at individual packets or tcp sequence streams, yes you are right it can be complicated and you need to have an understanding of TCP to understand whats is occuring. Its too granular for traffic calculations might i suggest any of these, they should give you the results

Hope that helps
