converting vhs to cd
I have quite few vhs tapes taken from a movie camera, from holidays etc, having them done professionaly will cost over $500 ($35.00 per tape).
Is there a way I can do it myself, I notice in this mornings Big W mag they have whats look like a usb attatchment that they say transfers vhs to cd,
I guess I will also need a program on the PC to do this. Any advice please would be appreciated.
thank you

There are several methods. 1 you get a tuner card for your computer. Now it sounds tough but all you do is take the side off your computer and plug the card into a spare slot. Now from memory one of those cost me about $70 from Aldi or go to a swap meet. These have an AV input and you hook your VCR to your computer and job done. Next is the DVD with a hard drive player. They have AV inputs. You input from your VCR to the hard drive then burn from the hard drive to a DVD. All DVD burners with hard drives etc can do that

Another is,panasonic and others have a VHS & DVD RECORDER (and OR back the other way)put your tape in and a blank dvd.push the button and say 3hrs later you have a DVD with a far better pic quality than the tape. The machine upgrades the pic somehow.
Just make sure you get the recorder type. some only record on VHS and play DVD's
And you can use it to record DVD's from the telly from then on
I did all our tapes on this even though I have a hard drive recorder type as well.Less fooling around.IMHOBack To Car Building & All The Sawdust.

thank you both for your replies
OK so i buy a memory card cost @70.00 and then away i go, but i can only copy from vhs tape, is that right
OR I buy a panasonic recorder with vhs AND dvd recorder where I can just about copy anything even TV programs. SO how much for the panasonic, like to know before I go to hardly normal so i can take an oxygem tank with me
Am i correct / wrong in the above assumptions
thank you

It's not a memory card, its a TV tuner card. Prices run from about $110 in a computer shop, to $70 at a computer fair.
You'll need to know if you have a free PCI slot, or a PCIe slot on your motherboard, or a PCMCIA slot if you have a laptop.
Your nearby computer shop (not dick smith or tandy - the nice little ones that build to order) will be able to install one if you are unsure what to do inside a computer (it really is a bit like lego).
You may also need a new hard drive; video can chew up a lot of space...but a one terrabyte drive is a little over $100 (computer fair pricing) if you only have a small amount of hard drive left. (ie under 100 gigabytes free space).
Free space can be important if you don't have a very fast processor - video encoding and compression is CPU intensive and your computer may struggle to do it in real time.
However, at the end of the day you have a PC that can be used as a digital video recorder (just plug in your TV antenna) or similar entertainment device!

Hi Macklin
Just picked Dick Smith for no reason and found this for starters.I have been into computers and been there and done the above ages ago.
The other way HERE or other suppliers is much easier and you have a great recorder you can use everyday from your lounge chair.
$349 maybe cheaper at other places.I would sell you my panasonic, but my wife would kill me.She now uses it to take shows off our hard drive onto DVD for me to watch on my TV.Back To Car Building & All The Sawdust.

thank you for yor quick reply.
A quick search and I found the manual but it does not appear i can do the VHS to disc copying.
I also tried the answer section on the site you gave but after trying to enroll and so far every user name i gave were taken so i gave up. I also tried justanswer but they wanted $16.00 to tell me. I could go to a tv shop tomorrow and they can tell me for nothing ?
