    Default Deleting software

Can some one please walk me through a method to delete an out-of-date package?

Ascentive Active Speed Oct 09 edition is installed and I no longer want it. I'm running Wiindows XP and IE8. This software appears in the 'Add or remove programs' application but won't delete, and I can not find any other way to delete.

Try looking in the menu for an uninstall option.
Click Start, All programs & find the program in the menu list, when you hoover your mouse over it, does it give up a list of menu options?
Is uninstall one of those options?

Some software has to be uninstalled by its own uninstall program, Windows can see it but can't uninstall it.

Sometimes it can't be uninstalled because it is running.
In the case, you have to go into Safe mode & uninstall it that way.

Restart Windows & after it has closed Windows, before it starts again, press the F8 key several times til you get a black & white menu.
Arrow up to Safe Mode & hit enter.

    It will be slow.
Once it has started, see if you can uninstall the program then.

I did a search, other people have had problems too.

    See if this page helps.

Try reinstalling it again, then try uninstalling it (sometimes the file that tells Windows what to uninstall either doesn't get written, or it gets deleted/corrupted).

    If that doesn't work:

(does anyone else hate how URLs get 'smartly' re-written now????)

Thanks Cliff. This application was purchased a year ago and I did not renew last month, which means I can't get INTO the program to possibly find an 'uninstall'. Depending from where I approach I get either "Setup.exe problem" or "Access Denied" even though I enter as Administrator.
Using your second post I downloaded REVO UNINSTALLER FREE - this seemed to do the job but alas, after rebooting, the blasted thing is still here. I'll have another go and this time select a deeper clean.

MS, thank you too. I'll access your link if I fail again.

    From that site:

"If you still see the program in your taskbar after you have restarted your computer, follow the instructions below:

    • Go to Start --> Find (or Search) --> Files or Folders
    • Type in the program name and hit the Enter key. Make sure that you are searching in the entire drive that the program was installed on (usually C.
    • Right click on each one and select Delete.
    • Restart your computer.

For ActiveSpeed, you should also search for and delete AS.exe"
If you can't delete AS.exe (locked or in use), give your PC the three finger salute (control-alt-delete) and kill the AS.exe process in the Windows Task Manager, then try deleting it.

I didn't mean in the program, I meant in the Start Menu.
Some program have a seperat program entry in the Start Menu to remove themselves.

After I have read a bit more, it sounds like this thing re-spawns itself if you don't find & manually remove the .exe file.

If you cannot uninstall it with the an uninstall program then you will have to do what Master Splinter has detailed above. This will work in the overhall scheme of things. May leave a few loose ends but most of it will be gone forever.

A bit late but here goes. If uninstalling a program after the removal process has done its thing I always do a manual search for the program name and remove the files that the search finds. Even this does not get all the crap, just more of it.
