DVD device not recognised
Hi everyone
With a heavy heart, I write that my DVD on the computer is not being recognised.
I rather foolishly (I assume) uninstalled Nero because I was having trouble with using it to burn music CDs. I couldn't seem to find a way to
1. Burn a CD without finalising it.
2. Select individual files from My Music to burn. In disgust, I went to using Music Match Jukebox to burn, but the Nero express screen that came up didn't have the choices I was used to from earlier versions . There was nowhere to choose not to finalise the disc.
After uninstalling Nero, I couldn't reinstall because the DVD/CD was no longer recognised. The Device Manager showed a yellow exclamation mark against the DVD and a nasty message - against ATAPI DVD DH20A46 (which came with the machine)
"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device - Error 41"
I tried looking for a newer driver without success and am stumped. I know I'm not the first to find error messages on Liteon DVD/CDs but what I have seen on the web is just meaningless me. It doesn't seem like it's just a matter of going onto the Canon site and downloading your printer driver.
The Liteon site didn't mention what I was looking for. And there appears to be an army of dodgy sites that want to scan your computer to find old device drivers.
I have not touched the DVD itself and connections cannot suddenly have failed so I don't think the problem is there.
Does anyone have a fix that doesn't require me to go to University and learn computerese for five or six years?
Please, no humour, I'm really not in the frame of mind for it.

Firstly, it could just be dead. A new one is about $35 dollars these days. If you aren't good inside the box, Myer had a USB external burner for $50 recently - cheap as...
Next, and you'll say 'get real', but have you unplugged the entire machine from the power at the wall for a minute? This will allow all capacitors to drain fully and might just do the trick.

You couldn't burn a music CD without finalising it, because to burn the CD to strict Red Book music CD standards means the disc must be finalised. This is because the index area of a music CD is at the start of the disc and cannot be added to once you have done a burn.
And for error 41 - from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123
Recommended resolutionPersonally, I'd turn the computer off, pull the drive's power cable, boot the PC, give it a minute or so to settle down, turn the computer off, plug the drive's power cable back in, boot the PC, and try the drive, then I'd try Microsoft's solution if it still was not working.
This problem occurs if you install a driver for a non-Plug and Play device, but Windows cannot find the device. Here are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.
If the Troubleshooting Wizard does not resolve the problem, do one of the following:
- If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, connect the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver.
- If the hardware was not removed, the driver files might be obsolete. In this case, update the driver from Device Manager. In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.
- If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, you may have to install a newer version of the driver. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type hdwwiz.cpl.
I use Deep Burner as Nero is waaaaayyy to large a program for my liking, these days.

Hi, if the problem has occurred recently, do a restore to put your system back the way it was. It is very unlikely that your burner needs any further drivers as they are usually supported by the OS
Many third party programs that control CD or DVD burners and playing applications, install a CD or DVD ROM filter device into Windows.
I wont go into details but this enables the function such as packager writing, where a CD-/R?W or DVD-/+RW can be written incrementally, like a hard disk.
These filter drivers sometimes have problems that cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. If your drive does not show up in My computer you can try the instructions below to try and correct the problem.
First of course, back up the registry.
then follow these steps
1. In registry Editor, expand My computer and then expand HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE
2. Expand SYSTEM and then expand CurrentControlSet
3. Expand Control and then expand class
4 Under Class, click.{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note. You may also see a UpperFilter.bak rigistry entry, You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, on the edit menu click Delete.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you may still have to remove the LowerFilter registry entry. To do this go to step 3 above and and delete the
LowerFilters registry entry as described for removing the UpperFilters.
Click Yes when you see "are you sure you want to delete this value.
Reboot your computer and with a bit of luck you should be back in business.'
But try to do a restore of your system first this may do the trick. Always try the simpler things first.
Good luck.Reality is no background music.

Hi John
Thanks for that. I actually did that before I read your instructions. I put the error code 41 into Google and got the instructions for removing upper and lower filters.
Job was right. However, I had to reload Music Match and Nero. I was amazed at my temerity - going into registry and deleting files. I have never attempted anything like that before, however, the web forum I looked at had many people having used this to fix DVD problems, so it seems it's quite common.
Cheers

Well done, you have to take the bull by the horns sometimes.
