Default Anyone know of any fast Public Proxies?

OK. For the last couple of days these Forums have been timing out and been unaccessible from my system. My ISP is Optus, broadband.

Now, this hasn't been an uncommon problem and I've complained (again) to Optus about these glitches; this time they're claiming 'tis due to a hurricane in the US and damaged lines. Fair enough... 'cept I've been copping this on and off for several months now and by the simple expediency of using a proxy instead of my default settings I can get straight through almost every time!

It rather puts the lie to Optus's claims of "we're doing everything we can..."

Normally I switch to a Telstra proxy (Melbourne or Sydney), changing back to default settings when Optus's "glitch" has cleared up, whatever it is. This ain't working now... I'm being blocked by Telstra's (I assume) ACL whenever I try any of their proxies. 'Twas bound to happen sooner or later.

Right now I'm logged in using a Mexican proxy but 'tis rather on the slow side. I'm just wondering whether anyone knows of a decent public proxy that's normally fairly fast? I'd like to see if it's "slower than usual" (which'd support Optus's claim of a trunk down) or if I'm just being fed another load of PR.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Be warned that a lot of those proxies are used by spammers and may be banned by many sites worldwide. A number of them are already banned by these forums.

There has been an off and on problem with the west coast of US for a good number of months now depending on who your isp is. Neighbourhood Cable my provider had a lot of trouble for a while with their up stream suppliers so much so that I often couldn't get on to the forums myself for many hours at a time.

Personally I reckon it's the tip of the iceberg and we're going to have a lot more problems down the track.

Thanks Bob, your efforts are appreciated.

That's the list I used to find my 'mehican server, but many of the "public" proxies it lists aren't. There're a couple I know of that are open only by incompetence on the server admin's part (probably miscfg'd home systems ) and it also lists all Telstra's proxy servers; which are blocking me by ACL so can hardly be called "public."

And thanks to you too, Neil, for the heads up. I'm aware that proxies have their inherent problems but I've been running some silly little tests to see if I can work out what the 'net (or Optus) is doing. You can only do so much with NMap, sniffers, etc before you become guilty of being targetted as a hacker yerself... I also suspect that you're spot on with about bigger troubles coming...

In the meantime I'll just tunnel out of my hole with Tor. (Who says I'm paranoid? And how do they know?)

Hi, Skew I've also been having the same problems as you rgds timeout, but i'm with bigpond. I also couldn't connect to google? I also notice that when forums are loading it looks at the google syndication don't know if that has anything to do with it?

I think it may also be a dns problem, because if I type the ip address instead of the url I can get onto google ie:http://66.102.11.44/ so I,m still trying to resolve these issues

To get around it for awhile I was using this service https://www.opendns.com/

    Rgds,
    Phil.
