I usually have 2 CD drives in my computer. I find that most burners when they die will still read a disk for a while. So, when the burner no longer burns properly, it gets replaced, but the old burner stays in the computer as a reader. I think (hope?) that using the old one as a reader will help the new one last a bit longer. Not sure if that works or not, but it can be convenient having 2 optical drives in the system anyway.
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Before you replace the drive, have a try of CDBurnerXP Pro. It's free, and I have found it will get a successful burn when Nero is having a problem.
So far, I haven't discovered any spyware/nasties associated with the program.Chris

And as Woodwould mentioned - programs running in the background. Try disabling your virus checker. Not a high likelihood, but........

Thanks Chris,
Had a go, it downloaded OK but then required some other stuff (Windows .Net?) downloaded before it would install... too much mucking about.
Just tried WMP as the burning program and the playback was even worse!
With regards background stuff affecting the process, how about this I just noticed: clicking noise coming from the computer speakers whenever the washing machine changes cycle...the laundry is right next door, maybe on the same wiring!? Would I be getting spikes through the system, even if I have one of those protector power boards? Not that I blame the CD problems on that.
Cheers,Andy Mac

If the speakers are powered (most are), the mains interference may be getting into the speaker power supply, rather than the computer supply.
Because the computer uses a switching supply, they tend to generate a lot of noise inside the PSU case, but have a lot of filtering built in to contain it. The filtering should be bilateral and filter trash coming through the mains so that it doesn't get to the PSU electronics.
If anything pulls the mains down in short term bursts, either the power stored in the PSU should keep the computer up, or it should restart.
If you are concerned that this may be an issue, try and burn a CD when you know the washer and other intermittent high power loads are off. If that solves the problem, put a moderate capacity UPS between the power point and the PC.
However, I would be inclined to suspect a misalligned burner, or something providing intermittent physical shocks to the stereo.

Andy - are you burning mixed CD's? Ones where you wouldn't expect there to be a gap in between songs/tracks?
If you are and you're getting a 1-2 sec gap then you need to chnage the properties of the track in Nero prior to burning the CD. Select all the tracks (except the first one) you wish to burn to cd in nero and then right click them and open up properties. In here there will be a "gap" shown to be burnt between tracks - the default is 2 seconds. Change this to 0 and then it should be fine. That should get rid of any "regular" gaps.
The crackle may be due to multitasking your computer or it's sound card during burning.
Hope that helps.Last edited by adamc; 17th August 2008 at 11:14 PM. Reason: grammer and spelling ;o)

I use "Sonic record now" and never have a problem ....it wont like copying while other programmes are running , but I doubt any other software does either .....firewall, and security are ok .....but thats it ...
to eliminate copywrite issues , use shrink dvd /cd......it eliminates a lot of the protection in the shrinking process .....save the file to harddrive and then copy it from there with a burner .....simple
