Getting a new Mac to talk to the network print server
Hi all,
The Kid has to have a Mac for her course so this PC household has to go pluralist
We should have no prob with it identifying and logging into the wireless LAN.
But the router/wireless access point is connected via Ethernet to a Netgear Print Server which plugs into the printer centronics port.
There's nothing in the manual about how to do this with a Mac. With a PC you run a program that creates a virtual printer port.
Wandering through webland, I found the manual for a diff print server from the same maker which advised that you could on the Mac just add an IP printer, enter the print server's IP address and you're home.
Has anyone been down this track?
Any advice would be welcome so if nec. I can budget for her own printerCheers, Ern

Hi Ern,
All of my hardware is Mac, so I don't have any problems connecting a printer wirelessly. To connect a printer open System Preferences in your Application folder, then open 'Print and Fax' then click on the plus sign to add a printer. If your Mac is already connected wirelessly then you should be able to add a printer from one of the options up the top of the 'Add Printer' window. I would imagine the 'Windows' would be the best place to start.
Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you're stuck.
Cheers,
Scott.

I havem't been there for a long time Ern, but if the printer connects via a Centronics port rather than USB, there is a fair chance that you won't get current printer drivers for a Mac for it anyway. My first port of call would be to investigate driver availability.
I have joined mixed Mac/XP sytems in to a netgear router recently and found that the range of encryption methods was limited. We managed to get a secure connection between both systems and the router but had to reconfigure the router and Mac to add the XP system.
You might find that a new printer with wireless connection built in would cover her needs and bring new capabilities to the rest of the network as well. Should not be a hassle to get such a beast intergrated into the overall system.
Presumably the Mac requirement relates to software versions and support, is there a particular need for a printer with specific capabilities?

Thanks guys; appreciate your taking the time to help.
The Kid got an Ipod Touch recently and was able to connect to the WLAN when I gave her the encryption key.
Good point Mal about the printer. No, it need not be anything special AFAIK for what she will need to do. It's an HP LaserJet 2100. I hadn't thought about the matter of Apple compatible printer drivers.Cheers, Ern

Apple support the LJ 2100 in the latest OSX release according too this (its a long way down the list but there).
Given that you could get a iPad to connect to the router without changing keys etc, there shouldn't be an issue getting a Mac in, and the Mac should support the printer so it should be all systems go.
