Default Do you know why this happened

I decided to move from W2000 Pro to XP Pro, so formated the raid array and did a clean install of XP. No dramas it was faster than W2K very good ....I installed the programs that I use ,,again no probs. The next day when I tried to run Registry Mechanic it wouldn't open by clicking the icon, right clicked , click open still not working. Pressed Ctrl,Alt, Delete..that didn't work also.Tried other applications. After 3 or 4 minutes the screen was covered with half open applications that I had been clicking, very slow. Rebooted , when the computer opened it was like a new installation. The backscreen had changed, bookmarks gone, had to fill in the data for email again. Programs gone. It was back to the correct speed, I have installed all the missing data and now it seems OK.
I have no idea what caused it but would like to know.
    Any ideas

When you do an install, Windows generally asks for a number of restarts as it configures everything. I get the horrible impresion that you may have started installing software and configuring before it had worked through all the restarts.

When you started it up again, it has recognised that it is lacking some config info from the install, and reverted back to the last good config set, started there and created the default email config info which has overwritten that which you had loaded.

I have been caught out in past versions of Windows, and when doing a clean install always wait until I have a couple of restarts without config windows appearing before I load software, and always reboot between each software install to ensure that this type of thing doesn't happen. Haven't actually had a problem in the last ten years or so, but figure that it's good, if painfull insurance.

At a guess windows managed to corrupt your user profile - possibly for reasons like Malb suggested. When you rebooted and windows couldn't open your profile it created a new blank one.

If you look in the 'Documents and settings' you will probably see two folders under your name. The original, now broken, one and a new blank one called name.001 Thats the profile that you are now using. You can dig around in there and recover documents, favourites and emails etc.

You usualy have to go into Tools/folder options and allow viewing of hidden files to find eveything.

    Cheers

    Ian
