help virtualbox printer
I'm running Linux Mandriva spring 2008 with virtualbox with Windows XP pro.
My problems are when windows is open I can print in Windows no problems and my external hard drive works in windows (well most of the time) but I can't use either of them in Linux while Windows is running.
To print in Linux I have to turn off virtualbox reopen it and shut down again then all is OK. If I don't open virtualbox all is fine.
Does anyone know a fix? I have seen similar questions asked on other forums but never an answer.

I think you can go to the 'Devices' menu and un-mount the printer from windows and then remount it when you need to print with windows. The same should also work with the external disk.

Thankyou Blackhole works for the printer; that's great it has been a real hassel in the past but now just unchec a box and print away. Unfortunately it doesn't work for the external hard drive it just makes it so Windows can't see it either. If I rechec the box it comes back in a minute or two.

The trick with the usb disk may be with having virtualbox infocus then pluging in the disk. To force it to work with linux make sure usb is turned off in the devices menu and virtualbox is not in focus and then plug in the disk.
...or something like that???
enjoy.

I tried unchecing external then unplugging the drive going to internet desk top and plugging in again it just remounts in virtual box and is only avaliable for windows. It could be better but I can live with it but the printer is great, would be better if it just worked in both at the same time but OK.

i have a folder on Linux that Windows thinks is another drive that I use for almost everything and don't have any problems; or would this be different if it really was another drive and Linux didn't have control.

It does it in a different way, that is a shared folder and linux allows windows to read and write. Virtualbox and VMware are both hardware emulators and it would be the same has having two physical computers and having wires from both go to the same hard drive.
If you have the virtual box running all the time then let it have the external disk and share it to linux using samba (windows sharing for linux)
