Short version: Provide relevant links to your site from other high ranking sites and make sure your keywords are relevant to your area and audience.

It's a lot of work to do that sort of thing. One easy way is to visit a whole heap of woodworking sites (if that's what your site is about) and comment on them, leaving your URL in the section provided. I'm surprised you haven't left a link here *wink*.

Have you looked at Google analytics?

You incorporate a snippet of google-supplied code in your web pages, and then you can track where visitors are coming from, how many visitors, what time of day, how long they spent on your site, which page they left from, what search brought them there etc. etc. etc.

One thing I found google liked was change - a static web page soon slid down the search results, whereas regularly updated pages were seen as more valuable.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

And make sure you put plenty of meta tags in your html doc to be indexed on.

You could submit your site to one of those search engine directories (SEO), not sure what sort of value you get out of it however your site should go up the search engine rankings. Costs a pretty penny though.

Search for pest control forums, blogs etc etc. Contribute to those blogs by commenting and adding your expertise. If there is a forum on pest control then contribute to the forum by adding your URL to your signature etc, etc, etc. In other words spread your URL everywhere that is pest control related. Have a look at the renovate forums which is run by the same owners as these woodwork forums.

    Hope this helps

Spend some $ on the Yellow Pages online, submit your URL there.

Google generally runs on two things, how many links you have coming into your site (With the general idea that a site that has been linked to is trustworthy, because people are happy with it and sharing it) and your content.

Submit your site to Google, so they can index it and submit to other search engines too (Yahoo and Bing mostly)

Depending on who you've made your site with, adding meta keyword tags that are specific to your business is good, but don't go overboard, otherwise you end up diluting the ones you have. Think about what people are searching for when you pick those tags, ie, people will probably be searching for a business type in a particular area- "Pest Controllers, Sydney"
