    Glenn is right with the Run As Admin using the right click on "Cmd"

    It's important to have the switches spaced as I've written.

    Others are also right, dead sectors mean trouble, but it's far from terminal. Huge drive capacities mean every drive has a few. In the old drive they were the Mark Of Death.

    Finding them and mapping them is the key. You can have heaps and it's still safe. It may just be a bit noisier as the heads work more.

    Have a look at a program that shows the SMART status of the drive. A freeware program like Defraggler has a tab showing these funky details. Defraggler will also tell you if a drive is GOOD, "marginal" or bad.

    The drive keeps count of all kinds of things with SMART. Obviously the one you want it the dud sector count.

    Warranties on hard drives are outrageously good. Pull the drive, get the serial number, go to the manufacturers site and type it in. They will give you an RA number and advice on how many sectors are considered a dud and you just post it in. They send a reconditioned one back.

    No data of course, so back it up.

    I ran chkdsk /f/x/r e: as Administrator overnight and here is the result.

    Not sure how the WD program can give a Test Error Code: 08 - Too many bad sectors and chkdsk says everything is hunky dory. Someone's telling porkies.

    New HDD fitted Saturday morning, everything back to normal. Thanks to all who offered help, especially Cliff, who spent a bit of time on the blower with me to help get things sorted .
