    Default Microsoft HOAX Phone call's

Many of us may have had these call's from Microsoft regarding they know you have a problem with your computer etc etc (Of course these are scam's)

Here's a reply or two I have come to use.

I didn't know we had a computer wife must have it hidden somewhere if you help me locate it I'd be greatful.

    OR

What computer? can't afford one. We are a poor Aussie family and live life on the bread line seems all our jobs are now being done overseas by non Australians.

Seriously though where are they accessing phone numbers from? Telstra is selling them, Data Base companies are selling them. Then there is the possibility the huge number of call centre employee's there are walking out of any or all of the call centres with personal information yours and mine. All handed to them on a GOLD platter by these companies.

    Hi Ray,
There was a news item a while back claiming they had rounded them up but I have had one since.
As for where do they get the numbers? try phone book or
whitepages.com.au - Search for an Australian Business, Government or Person

    Regards

    Hugh

I remember reading somewhere that the data entry for the phone book is done in India. It would not surprise me in the least if the data also 'fell off the back of a hard drive' into the hands of on-sellers or the data entry staff had a little sideline.

Haven't had a call in ages..

Even after havin the fool trying to explain to me where the start menu is(I don't have a start menu) and then telling me he wants me to allow him desktop access, they really do a good job trying to suck people in...

I stopped taking calls, (especially if they don't address me correctly) I just hang up, and the wife does the same. No comment nothing..

What I would love to do, is write a trojan that could be transmitted back to there pc once desktop access is granted, something that just deletes track 0 from there Hard drive,.. Be nice to have the skill to do that, trouble is its only the trouble makers that learn it..

Oh and I dont use windows or mac so the trojan, virus etc doesn't effect me anyway...

Only solution for those types is hang up once you know its not a friend and if it is and there stirring, hang up too

I love the reply, "I didn't know we had one".

    Happy New Year

A friend at work told me about her husbands effort. After having virus and infection mentioned he came on hard about an infection which was red, itchy and raw and located you know where and could they suggest any remedies. They hung up. He was pretty detailed.

I kept them on the phone for 3/4 hr to see where they was going. This was before the scam was well known. I got passed to technical person then they tried to pass me to financial person but I said I was not buying anything. The claim they were not selling anything came unstuck about this point in time. I finally hung up but they rang back again. They got short shift this time. I got the impression of people sitting around a table saying you can be financial guy this time, I did it last time. I was given a quick warning "may be a scam operating" from my son as I took the call. Very believable for most people I would guess but I have been around computers since Dos 5 and I knew their claims were carp.

Its always good if you have the time to keep them busy from ringing 120 other people in that 45 minutes until they want to connect and then I say I need to go to an appointment at doctors and ask them to call back later....

So if the claims were Carp, does that mean something was a little bit "fishy" LOL

The old bloke I visit each Thursday got done for $400 about a year back and realizing his error now trying fob them off if they ring.
Though the hide of these people; last month the thief who stole the $400 from him rang back apologizing for for the fraud last time and wanted to refund his money, asking to access the computer again; my old mate wised up this time and asked for a hand delivered cheque to his door and surely they'd know were to deliver it, then hung up.

Got one of these calls last night, the wife answered and strung them along for a few minutes.
When asked if she was the main computer user, she replied "No she was the housekeeper, the main computer users were busy and unable to come to the telephone".
The caller apologised profusely and then hung up.

I thought they must have stopped, I haven't had a call from the Microsoft service department for over a month now. I was getting 2 calls a day for a while there.

I tried everything, from abuse to just hanging up, saying I had an Applemac ( which I do ), to saying I was the Police, interpol, FBI, Bill Gates, none of it seemed to deter them.
Now they have stopped, after maybe 60 calls from them over a couple of months, they were pretty persistent .

Depends on what sort of mood I'm in. Usually I just hang up but if I'm feeling playful I might have some fun. I had my two boys in tears listening to me talk to one a couple of weeks ago
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

The federal police from 3 major western countries including Oz were getting together to deal with this threat according to a report I read late last year. Don't remember the other 2 countries. Lets hope this is true and they are successful.
