    Default Modem Router set-up.

    Hi guys,

My standard Telstra supplied modem (Thompson) is dropping out (one minute it's all good, the next all leds are out and no action) so thinking it's on it's last legs i went out to purchase a new one.
Instead of going to telstra, i went to a large appliance store and was told that the Netgear N600 Dual Band Modem Router (DGND3700) was the ant's pant's and would suit my needs perfectly. So out i went with my new gear.

Well....i cant get the thing to work.
I have transfered all connections straight from my old modem to this new one to ensure it's all plugged in correctly. Instructions say to log in directly to the modem through my browser using www.routerlogin.net or http://198.168.0.1 and then set the thing up from there, no cd was supplied in the box. But nothing happens, all i get is an error message saying webpage unavailable. I've tried going to the Netgear website for help but thats achieved nothing.

I went back to the store and the man said to download a driver from netgear but all they have is firmware (is this the same?). Then he asked what version of windows i was running (Vista). He said Vista is a pain to get some hardware running and it's more than likely a OS problem. He said make sure all Windows updates are current then try again, but no joy.

Have i wasted my money or is this a common problem? Any help would be appreciated as i'm getting frustrated.

    Thanks,

    Steven.

My first guess is your new modem is using a different network address space to the original modem. (Another common network address space for a modem might be 10.1.1.1). If that is the case your firewall/anti virus package maybe stopping you from connecting to the 192.x.x.x. address space.

First thing to try is turn off your firewall while trying to get your new modem working. If you are really paranoid you can start with the modem unplugged from the phone line, but it probably isn't necessary.

If you can then bring up the modem admin page then at 198.168.0.1 you will have to reconfigure your firewall to allow the 192.168.0.xxx addresses as trusted

Thanks Fuzzie for the quick reply.

Just tried turning off all my windows and anti-virus firewalls with the same results. Tried routerlogin.net, 192.168.0.1 and 10.1.1.1 with no joy.

    Back to the drawing board.

    Thanks again.

    Steven.

The netgear n600 uses 192.168.1.1 according to a couple of websites I found. Check if you are getting an ip address from the n600. That will (probably) tell you the likely router ip (192.168.0.1 Vs 192.168.1.1 vs 10.0.01). Command to find out is "ipconfig" in a DOS window. Or see if you can ping any of the 3 ip's suggested.

The OS is highly unlikely to have any part to play here if you using a browser to configure an external device. Maybe if you are installing some setup s/w but .... no further comment needed on that piece of advice.

Firmware is software (usually describes s/w for hardware devices that perform a set function). I wouldn't try to apply any firmware changes until you can successfully connect via browser. In fact, if you can't connect this way you probably can't update firmware anyway.

Fuzzie may be on the right track with the firewall, so that's worth a look too.

I just had a thought, you are trying to connect to the router with a wired not wireless connection ?

Dabbler is right, the problem is getting the computer connected to the modem which is not happening yet and wireless connection to a new router is often problematic, make sure you are using the network cable supplied with the router to connect to the computer during initial setup as per the setup guide.

I'd guess Vista automatically configures new wired networks, but I've never used Vista, if you have something strange happening there you might have to be logged in as an adminstrator and configure a new network. If you need help there, take the ,modem back to the store and ask the sales staff to demonstrate how to connect to the routers browser.
