Google MediaMonkey, there's a free version & 2 licensed. On the first google page there is a link to 28 other players reviewed.
First tried it about 10 years ago, heard it's got more features now.

I had the same problem about listening to music in the shed.
I obtained an old car radio/cd player. I can put all of the MP3's on a several CD's and hey presto.
If you got an upmarket model they have USB connections so you can put music on thumb drives.

Now for a bit more detail.
You need a case and a power supply and maybe speakers (although they may come with the unit).
I used an old desktop PC case and purchased a 12v power supply from Jaycar which can be left on. Being a woodie, you could make your own box.
From memory I thought of using a PC power supply (which fits in the case nicely) and has a 12volt rail. I think they need a dummy load on the 5v rail, being a switch mode PSU. I did not like leaving it on all of the time, as below.

If you need more info, I can pull my unit apart and have a look.
If you want to listen to the radio you would need to leave the PSU turned on when the player was powered off otherwise you will need to re-tune the stations each time.
You don't have this problem in a car because the radio is connected to the accessory switch and always has power.

When I made my unit there were lots of players around for free or next to nothing because the young blokes want bigger system with more noise power.
