Decision made and the process is on the go.
Existing phone no will be ported to VOIP, whole process will take 2-6 weeks, with most done around the 2-3 weeks.
One of the points made, and which I hadn't considered, is that in areas where NBN service is available the copper network will be de-commissioned after a period of time, although with the new government policy that may change.
There are 2 towers within a 3km radius of us, so we should get a reasonable signal.
When they come and do the site reception test they will install straight away if reception is OK.

I'm at home.
And look at the distance.
Doesn't mean squat in reality, except when folks start posting how 'fast' their connections are.
Stu.
(That costs us about $65 a month, with the telephone and unlimited download/upload.)

I know that the NBN Co gets a lot of bad press, but I was quite impressed when they rang me today to confirm the appointment for installing the Fixed Wireless Broadband next Thursday 14/11.

There's a group of holiday cottages just up the road from me and they all seem to be booked out to the NBN installation people (lots of cable installation trucks, etc)
I see them in the evening on their verandahs having a barbecue and a drink.
Beats me what the hell they are doing during the day that warrants 'unwinding after work' as it's certainly not installing any NBN stuff!
Last time I looked at the NBN rollout, there was no longer any indication of a future NBN presence in my neighbourhood.
Glad to hear that the NBN does exist somewhere ...Geoff

Well, they have erected at least 3 wireless towers in our area over the last months, so they are working somewhere! No cables here though, but quite a bit of cable laying activity in Bendigo itself.
Maybe the fact that Bendigo was in danger of falling to the Libs at the last election had something to do with that?

This whole process has been an eye opener.
Got a call from NBN on 7/11, ie a week before installation, to confirm that we were still OK with installation on the 14th
On Friday the 8th got an email from the provider, Aussie Broadband, to say they had despatched the hardware(router and VOIP adapter) to me, which arrived last Monday.
Then another call yesterday from the provider to again confirm that everything was on schedule for installation today. They told me that the installer would ring us 1/2 - 1 hour before he would arrive.
The big day arrived and at 4pm this afternoon an NBN contractor turned up to install (subject to his testing) our new Fixed Wireless Broadband service.
He did his testing, which confirmed a good signal, discussed location of the aerial with me and got my approval for that, then we discussed the location of the internal connection point and NBN modem. He explained he couldn't install it where I really wanted it because of NBN regulations, but was OK with my second choice location.
Installation took a bit longer than his estimate of 1.5-2 hrs, it actually took him 3 hrs, but it was done very neatly and with a minimum of fuss or mess (he even asked for a vacuum to clean up what little dust he had created)
There was a slight delay for NBN Co to OK his install (he had to submit photos via the internet, and my signature to prove that I was happy, this was all done on his iPad!)
After about an hour the connection went live and I was ready to test our new internet connection.
First thing I did was run a number of tests on Speedtest.net (see my previous results above)
So, as you can see just a tad faster than before! And of course we are saving at least $25/mth over our current fixed line + ADSL connection. So a win/win.
Haven't tested VOIP yet, that will be a job for tomorrow.
PS Those 2 images uploaded to the forum in the blink of an eye, not something I was used to!

I am pleased it went well for you, Big Shed.
It might have taken longer than estimated but a good result and a very neat and tidy installation contractor from what you say. I wish they were all that good.
Trouble is they aren't salaried employees, they are contractors paid per job so most don't care too much about the finer points. You did very well, and the new speed is obviously very welcome.
DougI got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

Awesome speed Fred, I would consider shooting someone to get that.
