Default NBN Broadband Network Wireless Service

Have just found out that this service is now available in my area.

Up until now we have only had access to standard ADSL via the copper telephone line.

My question is, does anyone have experience with this service which offers 25mbits downstream and 5 mbits upstream. How good is it, is the faster speed noticable in practice?

Got a brochure from Aussie Broadband offering 20 Gb/month, which is double our current ADSL download, for $40. For an extra $10/month they will port our current phone no, I believe this uses VOIP and includes all local and national calls. The 20Gb counts upload and download data, like Telstra does.

We currently pay $30/month for our phone line rental (plus all calls) plus $45/month for our ADSL plan, so we would save $25/month minimum and have more download and no extra call costs.

The extra call costs are not a big factor as most of our calls are now made on the mobile and we never run out of call credit in any month.

It would be good to hear personal experience from users of this service.

Nothing to offer... other than to say I'm following with interest. Same boat, different flag. (Or is the skull'n'x-bones universal? )
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

We hooked up to fixed wireless nbn here in Tas about 2 months ago and compared to our old 3G wireless it is brilliant. Don't know speeds or anything like that as I'm not very good with the computer but we are able to watch YouTube vids now which was impossible before. We get 100 gb on and same off peak for the same price as the 7 gb we got with Telstra . We are very pleased with it

That's great to hear Jim, thanks for replying.

Did you take the VOIP telephone option as well?

No we have decided that with our mobile plans never exceeding their allowance not to have a home phone. Hav'nt had one since we moved over here and don't miss the extra expense.

Faster cheaper and more download, oh I wish I could get the NBN, it goes past the end of our street to the new estate and we are looking at 5 more years for it to stretch 150 metres. However there are some worse off than us they are only across the road to NBN and can't get connected.
Our ADSL speed was around 1MBit we pay an extra $10 per month to have this sped up and we get around 5Mbit now. The speed IS noticibly faster, but I still think this is slow I used to live in an area with ADSL2 and had speeds up to 10Mbits.
So in your case say you have a "fast" ADSL connection you will be 5 times faster, click a link in the forum and you are there. There is no loading it is there. Because your speed will increase you will look at more web stuff so a bigger quota is a plus. Get VOIP you will still save $15 month minimum and you will have a "Landline" safety phone. VoIP quality on 8-10 Mbits talking to a mobile or land phone was not noticeable so you and your callers won't notice any difference.
hope I helped, sorry if I started out poorly but I pine for the NBN
P.s. Even the more emoticon page would load instantly for you

Thanks. yes we use the mobile for most of our calls. However we do also make a fair few calls overseas (and get calls from overseas) so totally relying on our mobile isn't really an option.

Yes, I do "get" the advantage in having a faster internet connection. For the first 5 or so years we lived here we could only get dial up, so ADSL was a big step up for us.
I have been pining for ADSL2 but that won't happen in our exchange.

What I am more concerned about is the "quality" of the fixed wireless internet connection.

No good having a faster connection that isn't reliable, so it was good to get some feedback from an actual user of this type of NBN service.

Okie dokie, nephew in QLD has had 20Mbits as a "crap this is slow" speed so speed/quality is good. it was out of service once so rather than run around in circles screaming he decided to ring random contacts on his mobile, gee it was good to hear from him

I do not have the fixed wireless broadband but I work in the industry of providing NBN products.

The speed these services are advertised is an "up to" speed. In practice it depends on a number of factors including network congestion and signal strength.

Many people are paying too much for speed boosts that they do not need and are really not doing anything for them. If you are accessing a server on the other side of the world, the data may have to pass over as many as 30 links to get from the remote server to you and the best speed you will get is that of the slowest of these links. The speed you are paying for is only between your computer and where your provider connects to the web.

Try typing in speedtest.net into the address bar which will call up a speed test programme. Be careful not to click on the ads for registry cleaners, viagra etc and run the speed test. Do this a few times and you will get a picture of the speed you are getting.

If you are on ADSL and getting over 10mb/sec, I would not worry about wireless unless there is a cheaper plan you can access on it. Also be aware that as more people take up fixed wireless in your area the network will have the same bandwidth but more users so your actual speed may decrease as more users come online. especially after 4pm when kids come home from school and everyone comes home from work.

Also note that getting fixed wireless installed involves testing NBN contractors to install an antenna on the roof of your house. You will have little say in where it goes as they are required to test the signal strength in a few places and install the antenna where the best signal is. They will then install some ugly boxes with flashing lights inside your house.

BTW, this is the simplified version for the not-so-tech savvy, before anyone tells me I am wrong. Its close enough to give people an idea of what is going on without having to explain all the technicalities that come up if I elaborate more.

    Cheers

    Doug

    Thanks Doug

    Average of 3 Speedtests

    Ping 92ms

    Download .49Mbps

    Upload .11Mbps

I think maybe the fixed wireless might give me a faster internet connection?

No worries, Big Shed. With ADSL 1 I didn't think you would make the 10mb/sec. Now you have a benchmark for how much better the wireless is when you get it.

Anytime you think the net is running slowly you can run speedtest.net. If you know what your usual speed is, and the speedtest is slower, its probably your service (your modem or computer or the link you are paying your service provider for), if the speedtest is returning your usual speed its something to do with a slow link you are downloading through.

    Cheers

Ok if we are going to share speeds:

My home connection on Cable3: download 113.46, upload 2.48

My work computer connection at the office: upload and download in excess of 500

    Cheers
