    Default Norton is back!

Remember Norton Utilities way back when for hacking the bowels of your OS?

And then they went into security s/w which was a memory bloat if ever there was one.

I've been using Trend Micro for security for several years; cheap 3 user license for the machines in the household and a friendly user interface.

Well the 09 update last year trashed the OS on one of the machines, requiring a full reinstall which failed to apply a comms driver. No amount of online help from HP succeeded in fixing it so I had to run a bl**dy cable under the house to hardwire it to the router.

Then on the remaining two machines the renewal nags drove me nut so no more TM!

The PC Mag review of security suites gave a good wrap to Norton 2010 so I've given it a go. Price about the same for 3 licenses as TM taking postage into account for an actual box.

And it works well. Little sign of memory hogging. Only diff compared with TM is the incoming mail checking slows Outlook down a bit.

Early days but the signs are good.

Oh, and it includes good old Norton Utilities. Pretty much no more than a front end for existing utilities buried in windows though. Still has registry checker and clean up and a few other bits.
    Cheers, Ern

Oh Man, that takes me back. I remember when the only real virus out there was the "marijuana" virus, and you detected that by looking at the boot sector of your disk with norton utilities' hex editor, and you got rid of it by copying the boot sector from a known good disk over the top. Those were the days.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

That's nice to know. I bought Norton 2007 and it only lasted a month or so before going to Trend or others I've tried since. I use comodo at home and it's a PITA (worst than Vista for nagging you). Might have to try Norton again then.

I find getting the OEM licenses works well - a 3 user pack usually costs $35 with the purchase of an internal component for a PC. A Once a year RAM or HDD upgrade is usually on the cards anyway, so it work for me Heaps cheaper than renewing!

    Good tip; thanks Dave.

Peter, wow, that was heavy duty hacking.

    Ah well, there's a cloud.

On one system Firefox wouldn't run with NIS 10.

Great online support though. There's an online chat support system, and I spent 3 hours today, gravitating from a tech, to a supervisor to a member of the elite team. (Golleee). You install LogMeIn and they take over your machine and try to fix the problem. Mr Elite was also on the phone to me at the same time from some overseas centre.

He's promised to research further and ring me back.

    Question

Firefox!! I gave up on Firefox because it caused too many hassles. I now run Google Chrome and find it wonderful. I use Trend for security and so far no problems. Seems very compatible with Goodgle Chrome.

How many have used PC Cillin?

Artme, I use Chrome myself and like the speed. The downside is no gestures plug-in and add-ons like Robo-form (for auto p/w and user name entry) don't work/aren't available. The 'customer' in this case prefers FF (we have a 3 PC network in the house and I get to play sysadmin).

As per the first post, I've given up on PC Cillin (Trend Micro) for the reason stated there. And in independent tests it hasn't been as effective as other programs. See PCMag website.

But compatibility is always an issue. Security s/w gets its tentacles deep into the bowels of a machine, and some packages work fine and some will never work with a given setup.

    Thumbs up

So does this imply the program designers are remiss?

Why are the program designers and security people not collaborating?

Don't forget the OS and hardware level coding!

It's the sheer complexity of what's in the box.

My son is in IT support; he might say have to set up 20 new desktop machines, all with the same specs from the same supplier that came in the same order. He sets one up to work with OS and application s/w, network settings etc. He then mirrors that setup on all the others.

But more often than not one or more won't work. Might be just a slightly later version of the graphics chip eg. which has different hardware level coding.
