    Default Two operating systems

On my fairly new computer, I have two operating systems, Win 7 and XP.

These reside on drive C and drive D. I needed to keep XP to run Autocad R14.

To swap between the two systems, it seems I have to shut down first.

Is there any way I can avoid this without shutting down one, then firing up the other?

    Ken

Unfortunately no. Each operating system needs to have exclusive access to the computer's low level resources, ports, memory, etc.

The only real way it could be done is through virtualisation, having both OS's running as virtual machines on the host. They'd still be sharing CPU and memory resources but the host OS (eg vmware) would manage this.

Be aware some software also won't run on virtual machines due to licencing limitations

Install something like VirtualBox, install XP in the virtual environment, and install Autocad R14 in there. I was going to say that if you had any problems with Autocad not liking being virtual you could hunt up a torrent that would be more likely to work, but there's not a lot of application software from 1997 left on the torrent sites!

It would be much easier to buy a pc just for XP and Autocad.
You can pick up a suitable pc for $50

    Hypothetical question.

If I was to reinstall Windows7 Home edition in 32 bit mode, could I then install and run Autocad R14?

How can you tell if Win 7, already installed, is 32 or 64 bit?

Click "Start" then right click "Computer". Select "properties". That will show you. Its also under "System" in control panel.
