Default Painfully slow Internet - can't even type properly

I'll try to keep this brief because it's even difficult typing .

My internet is painfully slow on this PC. It takes up to a minute to load a page, and just to scroll down through a page can take several minutes.

It's not the ISP or the modem, because Speedtests on this computer vary radically from the Mac on the next desk:
PC ping 159 milliseconds (Mac 27)
PC Download 0.31 mbps (Mac 9.28)
    PC Upload 0.47 (Mac 0.80)

    SPECS:
    TPG, ADSL 2+
    Windows XP
    Firefox v28 (latest, just installed)
Solid State Harddrive 32gb with 5gb free (defragged a week ago)
Other programs (Excel etc) are just fine.

Been like this for a week, but getting slower and slower, until now where it's virtually useless. Even backspacing to correct a typing takes many many seconds.

Before I download Malware (because it was a complete fiasco last time - couldn't even turn the volume down without an error msg) is there anything else I should check please?

Dunno Nick. I just killed and restarted Firefox (because i couldn't shut it down normally) and now there's an improvement. Still not what it should be (never is) but much better.

Trouble is, in a couple of hours it'll be crap again if it follows the same pattern (multiple restarts of FF in the last week)

Edit: here we go, just correcting your name and it's crap again.

    Default Curiouser and curiouser

I downloaded Malware Bytes, but when I went to run it it said the system didn't have the required specs. Eh?

    It did last time....

Could it be that if there is a bug then it hides the system specs from things like Malware? That would be clever if it does.

    Default and indeed curiuoser

When I first downloaded Malware it was from a win-install site - this is the one that said not enough resources to run.

So then I downloaded from Malware itself, and it can run. That sounds rather odd to me.

Ok, so I've run Malwarebytes and it found this:

so I quarantined it - the internet is still rubbish, after a complete system restart. As before, it was good for a minute or two and now back to ridiculous.

Does anyone know what PUP.Optional.MyStartSearch.A is?

    Ping 26 ms
Download 9.25 mbps (about where it should be)
    Upload 0.75

but everything still running like a freezeframe movie (including the speedtest itself).

Question: how can I have fairly reasonable download speed and yet everything running in freezeframe? Even changing tabs takes a while. Does that give any clues?

    Hi Brett

Do you know if other applications are running at the same time, such as in the background? These could be using up a lot of RAM. Rebooting the machine does not close them if they are set are in the start up.

    Is your RAM fully functional?

    Regards from Perth

    Hi Derek

At the moment there is nothing else running (not even Excel), but when they are they're fine.

Fire up task manager and check the processes, see if you can see if ff is using up CPU or memory.

    From Wikepedia:

    MyStart.IncrediBar Search[edit]
MyStart.Incredibar Search (Mystart Search IncrediBar, MyStart toolbar, MyStart Search, IncrediBar, IncrediBar Games-EN) is a very dangerous Internet browser hijacker, virus, and spyware that often comes embedded with many download applications and installers such as HyperCam. It is known to install itself into Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Google Chrome.[8] Upon installation, it begins to alter browser configuration settings and collect sensitive user information such as full name, telephone number, and home address.

Symptoms range from no symptoms at all (simple processor drainage) to complete system crashes so severe that the victim has to re-install their entire operating system.

MyStart uses browser helper objects (in this case search tools) and infects some users by installing MyStart search toolbar into their browser (Firefox is most vulnerable) which redirects internet users to MyStart’s websites, mystart.incredibar.com in particular. Some Internet users report that they are redirected for every search or webpage they visit.

    If mystart is not removed:

Your computer can become malformed and operate improperly.
Your browser settings become corrupted and Internet usage is taken hostage by a constant redirection setting to drive-by-download websites, which can open the door for more infections, and overall cause a wide range of operating system related issues associated with Trojans.
Computer accesses may become blocked or locked if not MyStart is not addressed, similar to the behaviour of ransomware. [9]
Most of your user-initiated browsing and search is redirected to MyStart-based websites while you're infected.
High levels of CPU usage are due to MyStart processes, which can cause systems to crash or become malformed.
Removing Incredibar can be an extremely daunting task since there are countless different variations and most infected systems can expect to find undesirable Windows registry changes, browser configuration changes, and files with random strings that are installed into the user's local settings folders and depending on the user's operating system, its version, and even computer the location will vary from one PC to the next. In one version of Incredibar it appears to be a removable add-on, plug-in, or extension within web browsers; however, simply removing Incredibar via the inbuilt browser add-on removal process is not enough since the program has already combined registry and file installs of which re-installs itself upon a system or browser reboot.

A few virus and spyware removal applications such as Webroot Spysweeper, Eset NOD32, AdwCleaner, and Junkware Removal Tool are known to remove Mystart.Incredibar, but using these applications to do so will not revert the user to their default search engine.
Looks like that is the cause of your problem and needs to be removed. This Malware tip shows how.

    Peter.

This might be the tip of the day.

firefox.exe was using 35% CPU and ~480,000k memory, until I started this reply. CPU at 50% while I'm typing.

Total 83 processes running, including a couple that I haven't opened in weeks:
    Dropbox.exe 89,416k
mbamservice.exe 132,884 k (no idea what this is)
    Skype.exe 120,696 k
plugin-container.exe 90,136 k (no idea what this is)

firefox.exe seems to be up around 50% quite a lot (even when I'm not loading a page)
and I just saw mbam.exe got up to 50%

Now, when I move a window around the screen I get trails (a sure sign that CPU usage is up there).

Ok, restarted without add-ons and everything seems to be running at a proper speed.
firefox.exe using about 23% while I'm posting this. BIG difference in typing speed (instant)
