Default WANTED - people with a Mac (any Mac) and people with high spec PCs to watch iView

    G'day

I have a medium spec (but aging) Laptop Pc and have great difficulty with ABC iView. Have tried all sorts of things to get a reasonable experience, and after consultation in another thread have started to think that there is something about the age of my Laptop that prevents it working properly in iView.

However, one of the main contributors to that thread has tonight watched iView on a high spec PC and seemed to be getting similar problems to what I have.

So, I'm interested to hear from people with any Mac and others with high spec PCs to see what your experiences are. Have attached a Poll for convenience. You may want to post your experience, and what your internet situation is.

There may be more to this than meets the eye (view).

I have a low spec PC (like 8 years old).
1.6 gig dual cpu PC and have no trouble watching iview.
But I also make sure all the rubbish is not running all the time, google updates, adobe updates, flash updates etc..

I'm guessing you just need a good clean up of the PC.

If you want me to teamviewer in and clean it (of temp files and malware) I can do that for you.

If you want me to give you a list of free software to run, I can do that as well.

Are you sure that your modem is happy and router as well.
I had a router that worked for my connected PC but wireless people said it was slow.
I eventually swapped it out and even my connections are better.

If your using a router to get to the modem, try the PC direct to modem.
If your using wireless, maybe connect with a cable for a while to see if that fixes it.

I regularly use ABC iView and the SBS OnDemand web site. For me, both services work well on a NBN 25/5 Fixed Wireless Service, and when watching SBS OnDemand, I always select the highest available stream rate. The SBS site does seem to offer a better picture quality than iView.

I use Linux on all my PCs, so to see what these two sites are like on a Windows 7 box, last night I checked ABC iView and SBS OnDemand on my partners PC. It is a five year old budget Acer box bought in early 2010. I can't remember what CPU is in it, but I know it was a cheap end of model run-out when it was bought, so the CPU is probably 2009 vintage. iView works OK - no stutters etc. SBS OnDemand stutters on the fastest stream rate, so I had to back off a bit on the stream rate by one notch, and then it ran OK.

FenceFurniture has mentioned in another post that he is using an ADSL2 connection. As mentioned by another respondent, I'd also be suspecting the ADSL Modem as being the culprit. My reasoning is that most probably the modem doesn't handle that ptotocol used by iVView very well, and that maybe the Mac can work with the ADSL Modem's poor protocol handlng, but the XP based windows box can't.

One possible solution is to check the web site for the ADSL Modem manufacturer to see if there is a firmware upgrade available - you might be lucky and find an update that addresses the issue. The alternative fix is an updated ADSL Modem with WIFI which shouldn't set you back more than $100. The ADSL modem will have to be replaced by a WIFI router when you get NBN.

    Hi Roy

    It's a Netcomm Gateway ADSL2+ Wireless N150 Modem/Router (about 4 years old now).

    Is that not WiFi?

When NBN shows up wouldn't I need another modem type anyway? (like a cable modem or summink)

Thanks Peter. I cleaned it up as much as I know how (temp files, compressed old stuff, deleted old pgms). There's a heap of stuff that I just don't know about such as i386 folder.

A few days ago I purchased Advanced SystemCare Ultimate from IObit but haven't downloaded it yet (there was a cockup). It's supposed to check registries etc, so maybe I should run that before anything else?

Doesn't matter if I run off the Modem wireless or cabled, iView is still the same. Some of the things I have done have improved it slightly, but there's a long way to go.

I'd also be checking the router. You could check that it's using the latest firmware. From the description you've given, this link might help:

    http://support.netcommwireless.com/product/adsl/nb14wn

The pdf says the firmware was last updated in 2010, but it could be a newer version than the one the came with the modem.

I've had no issues with streaming iView on PCs and iPads, and I'm in the Blue Mountains too.

    cheers,

    ajw

We just worked out that the modem/router was purchased mid-2011 so i'd say it would have the latest version of the firmware (unless it was REALLY old stock)

I'd still check the version of the firmware, as manufacturers often ship the large majority of one model with the original firmware. The updated firmware often ships shortly after the model is released for sale. As most of these devices have a very short life in production, the production models often don't get the update, relying on the customer to apply the update.

I make it a habit to update firmware on network devices as soon a get them, and more often than not, there's an update available. Some of the more recent network will check automatically for upgrades and inform you, but not all.

Brett, although your computer could use an upgrade I know your philosophy on upgrading electronic equipment (how old is your phone again?) for iView in particular, I think a modem upgrade would see a big improvement.
I upgraded my modem and WiFi adapters late last year because we were having similar issues with iView although not as bad as yours sounds. There were other modem related considerations, not just iView, but I got a Netgear N600 Modem/router which will connect directly to NBN and a couple of N600 adapters.
Very happy with their performance. iView streams flawlessly. We are on ADSL2+ with not overly impressive DL rates. I am with internode and all iView content is unmetered with them so I rarely(actually never) exceed my DL limit.
Currently connected to the router are 2x desktop PCs, 2x Android tablets, 1x mini Android computer connected to the TV, 2x Android phones and an iPhone(work phone)
The android mini computer is great, I downloaded the iView app and the SBS on demand app and I can watch iView and SBS OD on the big TV. We had a iView marathon the other night and watched all the Jack Irish (highly recommended by the way) episodes.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I replied to the original thread about iView stuttering. I have a fleet of Dell laptops older than your unit, D420 2GB Dual Core 1.2GHz no issues, D630 4GB Dual Core 1.8 and 2.0 Ghz no issues and D830 4GB DualCore 2.2Ghz no issues. Internet is Optus cable via a Netcomm Cable modem/router. D830 is connected to router via 2m cat 5 cable, the rest run WiFi on g format. All units on Win 7 at various levels, Home, Pro, Ultimate, browsers are regularly updated Firefox and Opera.

Just tried on the last machine in the string, old Medion Centrino 2GHz single core with 2GB XPHome SP3 and Opera and Wifi g. Plays full screen from iView as a constant stream (no stuttering or freezes) but is dropping about 1 screen in 4 or 5 so there is some obvious lack of smoothness in the video. Task Manager advises that this is running 100% of processor capacity and most of the memory capacity as well. This machine only still exists because I have a multifunction printer that I have multiple sets of ink for and cannot get viable W7 drivers for. It does whatever scanning is needed and transfers back across network, and the W7 laptops print to PDF and then this prints the PDFs as required.

Hope this info helps, but I didn't vote because none of these machines rate as High End Windows.

Well, I tried iView on my Android tablet, and despite the tablet correctly adjusting the clock back an hour, iView kept giving an incorrect time error.

    YouTube plays fine, though.

    To sum up iView:

    Less than Standard Definition resolution
    Problematic on some PC/browser combinations
Having a hissy fit on my tablet because of daylight savings time
Did I say less than SD resolution? 'Cuz that's a killer!

Nope. Can't see the point in using it! If I miss something I wanted to watch, and there's no torrent, iView doesn't seem to be the solution!
