printing threads
I think that, like many of us, I give away most of the things I make? I have been asked if I could include a printed copy of any threads or posts, with the goodies, when I give them away.
Is there a neat and elegant way of printing say a relevant WIP thread?

Yes there is, click on Thread Tools at the top of the thread and select Show Printable Version.
You can then print this to a physical printer or to a pdf file.
This will however only print the text, not any pictures in the posts or loaded as attachments, a major shortcoming IMHO in vBulletin.

If you have a full copy of Adobe Acrobat (not the Reader) you could save the pictures to disk and then insert them in the relevant places.
There are a couple of forum software packages out there that actually print the pics with the posts, much more civilised.
Maybe the upgrade to vBulletin V4 will overcome this shortcoming?

I use PDF Creator a fair bit for this type of work, so thought I would give it a try. The first attachment was the result from PDFC for this thread, pretty much all the guts but none of the skin. No glossy pics in the thread but the avatars were included, so I hoped and went in search of something with pics.
Attachment 2 is the result from workbench thread with piccys. Similar effect, no skin, but the pics come through as per the thread.
PDF Creator is freeware, but wants to load toolbars etc, but can be stopped from doing so during the install phase, or they can be removed later without affecting the program.

Save the webpage first and then print as usual. will print text and pictures. To save the webpage, click on "File" and then click on "Save page as"
After saving, open the saved webpage and print.Reality is no background music.

As I ran through all the answers to the question asked I noted the age of the contributors. Have a look. There are no pimple faced youths with cyber blood running through their veins. So the handle, one gets from using these machines, is not restricted to the youngens but can be mastered to all.
I have been saving the jokes displayed on here for a while. What I do is...highlight the text, only, Copy the open a page in office, paste and save.Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

I am able to get someting usable via Windows Internet Explorer print function;
page set up, portrait, margins NIL (but sets at 2.96mm?), remove all headers, footers and page numbers and (unfortunately) choose 'print backgroung colOrs and images' because, if I don't, I dont get any images!
print preview, set zoom to 70%
print, set to paper type etc
I then get an exact screen view on the page BUT...
each page of the thread reqquires 5 printed pages AND...
printing the background colours gobbles up the ink
I can remove the background colour from the screen and the printed bage by setting Explorers 'view/style/no style' BUT I lose the formatting as well.
I have arranged for a printer ink tanker to park out the front and warned the bank.....
Don't get TOO carried away chambezio, I still have to sit out the front and wait for a pssing 9 year old to set the DVD recorder......!

Another way, would be to download Gadwin Printscreen (free), and then take screenshots of the thread. You could then put the images into a document.

Fletty, If you need to do many of these prints you should consider pdf software. That way you can print to a pdf file, edit the result to remove unwanted website dross and overall have better control over the final product.
Do your sums and you might find it's cheaper than burning printer cartridges on unwanted extras.
It's been a while since I used the freeware versions so I don't know anything about their current editting abilities but I can imagine they have advanced somewhat. Similarly I don't often have the need to edit with Adobe's acrobat anymore either. But it used to be very easy to block out regular shapes and cut out unwanted bits and pieces of an original screen "capture". You can even add and edit text as well, add a weblink to text, change page order etc. Adobe's website has a 30 or 60 day free trial which you can register and continue to use without and uninstal/reinstall if you buy a license later.
And importantly for some, you can keep file copy for yourself. Future WIPs can be documented in pdf as you go and you can a pdf version in your WIP posts.
