    Default Not a puta - a phone

Can't think of anywhere else to ask this....

My Nokia 6110 phone Li-Ion battery will no longer take a decent charge (5-10 minutes talk time and then I have to plug in, or talk to myself). Is there something that can be done, or is it a case of buy a replacement?

It's a great phone, and I have no desire to replace it. I'm sure there are new models that have built in Thicknessers or Routers or something, but I just want to make calls.

    Thanks, Brett

    Looks like a genuine Nokia Battery for $4. BP-5M Battery for Nokia 6110 Navigator 6110-N 5610 5700 6220-C 7390 8600 AUS | eBay
Probably not worth hassling over trying anything else.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

The 6110's battery is common to a few other Nokias. You should be able to pick up a replacement easily. The only thing you need to decide is genuine (more expensive) or 3rd party. Capacity should be similar and they all should be Li-ion. Don't know about a $4 one. Sounds suspect to me.
Might get a crazy answer but why not ask a local brick and mortar retailer. You never know.

It's hard to say dabbler. There prolly isn't much demand for them as the phones are 5 years old now, so could be dumping the stock (and I hardly ever see a 6110 out and about). Anyway I've just parted with a grand total of $4 including postage. If it's a fake...who cares for $4.

Peter - you just saved me twenny bucks, and a bit of a long walk for my partner. Good man!

I've been selling phones a long time and I've seen this happen frequently. Replacing the battery may not fix the problem as the phone may be drawing too much from it. It may improve slightly but it won't necessarily make the phone operate like new. Also the replacements battery is likely very old and may not function 100 percent.

For a 6110 I'd strongly consider replacing it. That phone was released over 5 years ago. You might replace the battery and it may fix the problem, only for it to fail in some other way very soon. Phones are so cheap now anyway it probably won't cost much more than a battery, and you'll get a new warranty for peace of mind.

If you do replace it, please recycle the old one. Most phone shops will have a recycling bin available.

Li-ion batteries loose their ability to store charge over time - this happens from day of production onwards, even if it is not used - so I'm a bit wary of ebay sourced li-ions (especially really cheap ones), but my google results turned up a local supplier for $11.95 + $5 postage

Thats a Gen Y thing, get new every 12 months. Or are after a sale?
We save the planet by using it till its dead.
The baby boomers go along the lines of if it can be fixed then thats what you do. A $4 battery is worth the try. Most batteries only go for a year or 2 at most with normal use.

My Nokia 2310 is about 6 years old and still works fine. It's used every day. My wife's Nokia 3315 is about 10 or 11 years old. It's been passed down for the kids to use so we can contact them when they go down the street to play, so it doesn't get daily use, but it still works fine. From my experience therefore, Nokia hardware at least is pretty reliable in the long term.

It's not a 12 month old phone. It's very old indeed and I was simply stating that a battery may not fix the issue.

Also I can hardly be trying to "get a sale" when I haven't disclosed what company I work for and I have no intention of doing so because in a case like this it can be perceived as a conflict of interest.... so don't assume I'm trying anything underhanded. Merely offering advice based on nearly a decade of experience with these things.

As for your mention of the environment issue, yes I agree absolutely.. hence I mentioned the ability to recycle phones. Over 90% of a phone can be recycled.

I understand the notion of fixing things quite well, but there comes a time when it may not be worth it, especially given that it won't necessarily fix the problem at all.

    Alright chaps, settle please.

For the record, I never interpreted eisbaer's comments as looking for a sale. The Gen Y factor is quite true i believe, in the main because of built in obsolescence (which we baby boomers started), and because there's a new bunch of features with every new phone release, most of which are entirely unnecessary, or even desirable.

For a miserable $4 it's worth finding out if it'll fix the problem IMO. I don't want to learn a new phone as frequently as the manufacturers would like me to - I'd much rather spend that time making sawdust. Furthermore, I do not trust manufacturer's statements of aural/vocal clarity and have been bitten by a P-O-S Nokia when the coloured screens first appeared (2003?). The 6110 is brilliantly clear, and that's my main requirement.

Off topic - as for the iPhone - it's just another P-O-S that drops out with regular monotony. Far too many features, and not enough good features (like a keyboard that can actually be used without a typo every three strokes, and I have pretty slender fingers). My partner has one and I have used it extensively - no thanks.

    Everybody happy now?

    Thanks for all the input.

I may have an intact 6110 navigator complete with battery in a cupboard somewhere. Will have a look.

Either that or maybe it is simply time for a new mobile phone?!?
