    Default Old Samsung Tablet

    hey guys,
I have a Samsung tablet I bought in 2011, used it for a week while my PC was in storage and after not using it for years gave it to mum who hasn't used it.
My question is would the battery be any good for reasonably short usage and would the O/S take modern software - the thing has probably has barely 50 hours use.
I'm thinking of getting it back off mum to use as a portable ebook reader and put Forscan on it to read codes on the car.
But I'm wondering if given the age it's worth getting sent over - I'm in Qld, mum's in Perth

If 'tis a Galaxy Tab (common back then) then you should be able to pick up a replacement battery for around $30-$50, if the current battery is toast.

I'm pretty sure that by 2011 they were 2nd-gen android devices, so you shouldn't have any major drama with updating the OS, if you're of a tech persuasion. I doubt you can just install a common, modern "off-the-shelf" OS though.

Edit: here's where I bought a battery for my old Tab S. Gives you an idea of current prices in $AUS.

    I have a Samsung Note GT-N8010. It's a 10" tablet from (I think) 2014.
Until recently, I used this as an eReader. It still has it's original battery which lasts around 5 hours of reading with WiFi turned off.
I installed Linage with Android 9. There is a lot of information available on how to do this on the web.
I used ReadEra as the eReader app. Not all apps will install on the Linage build.

I recently bought myself a Kobo Libra 2 eReader. I use a free program called Calibre on my computer to load books onto the Kobo.
I changed to the Kobo because my eyes would stream tears after about 4 -5 hours reading on the Samsung. I did use a blue light filter.
I will not say that the Kobo has eliminated the problem but it is greatly reduced.
    YMMV.

    Good luck with the Samsung.

Calibre is the best ebook reader I've found, I've been using it for years first on Win7 and now on a Win10 PC.

Calibre is excellent for handling a library across different devices, but I find it lacking when it comes to actually using it as an ebook reader.

It's doesn't take much to find good dedicated readers for each different device though. (Unless one is a Kindle. )

    Default Windows eReader

I have to agree completely about Calibre.

For a reader for Windows, try Icecream It will even read the book to you!

I had a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 from around then. Its screen was at least as good as many of the current 8inch tablets but there was no upgrade path for the OS. After many apps stopped working due to OS changes I Looked around for a hacker's upgrade but gave up. There were some pub domain OS version updates available, but i found too difficult to install and not everything worked even if the install worked.

With some regret I eventually junked it. The time investment in getting it working with current apps was just not worth it. Finding old apps that will still install is just as difficult. Google Play store does not support devices that old.

I'd suggest just go get a current cheap Lenovo 8" instead.
