Saving/Transferring old Home Movies to an External Hard Drive assistance please.

I'm trying to do this for the upcoming 60th anniversary of the local community club were our family has volunteered for over 20yrs.

So here's the current situation and issue.

We transferred a video from my JVC DV Tape to a DVD via the TV back in the day - Gymfest in 2005

We now want to transfer that DVD to the computer, and then add it to an external Hard Drive

Also we want to be able edit the video footage.

The DVD in question will play in Windows10 via VLC program but it is not recognized using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, AVS Video Editor or in File Explorer.

It baffles me that VLC will play it but windows file explorer doesn't recognize that we have a DVD-R in the drive!

All and any assistance, help, suggestions by people who know how would be gratefully appreciated as I only have 10days to get this sorted.....
Thank you in advanced. Cheers, crowie

I use a program called FreeMake to convert DVD videos from a DVD to an .avi file on an external HDD. Other video formats are available.

The free version doesn't allow editing but the paid version does.

    Easy to use.

Turns out I needed to put the Home DVD in the older desktop computer still running Windows XP; it opened and I transferred it easying just changing the extension on the file...
Now to do the 1999 through to 2016 videos plus photos....
