    Default Saving You Tube videos

    G'day all,

Where I'm situated, on a rural property just outside of Goulburn, I have to rely on a satellite feed for my computer reception. This set up is all I am able to have until the NBN is rolled out to the masses .... or should that be IF!
Anyhow, my dilemma with having to get my computer feed this way is that anytime I want to view a YouTube video, I am forced to suffer through a disjointed playback of the video 99% of the time. So what I would like to ask of you fine folk is if there is a way to save (I know you can do this in YT itself) or record (preferably) these videos and either view them in another format or save them to a DVD?
BTW, I am running Mac computers here. Any help or advice would be gratefully accepted as it's driving me mad having to take more than twice as long as necessary to watch a simple 5 min vid.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

Try the DownloadHelper addon for Firefox. That's what I use on Win7, should work on Mac too.

I'm not sure if the mac version does it as well, but in Firefox you can add any number of extensions that will download YouTube videos for you. The one I have is called download manager, but there are others as well. If you have a Windows 8 machine, then there are several apps that download as well - my favourite there is Fast YouTube Downloader.

Otherwise there are websites such as keepvid you can go to, to download the videos from

I use the DownloadHelper addon for Firefox to save youtube videos and for more difficult videos that defy Downloadhelper I have used CamStudio to capture a window of the display screen. CamStudio is however limited to only a few minutes recording time.

The firefox downloader is the friendliest, but also checkout http://www.youtubedownloadersite.com/ My media player like these downloads better, it also allows you to download a whole series in one lot.

I only use the free version, there is also a paid version with more functionality.

    Default realplayer

    I use realplayer. Free version.

When I play an internet video a little pop up window asks me if I want to download it.

If I think I might want a copy I hit yes than close the video page - no point in playing it and downloading it as well.

Not sure if realplayer works on Macs.

Pretty late Bob, but I just spotted this thread. Another alternative for downloading YouTube vids is to use the KeepVid site. No need to install plug-ins or software with this one.
It's here: KeepVid: Download and save any video from Youtube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, iFilm and more!

Ignore the big green 'Download' and 'Play Now' buttons, they're an ad. Just enter the link and press the grey 'Download' button. You'll be presented with a list of available formats for the vid. Choose one, then (in your case, Bob, the Mac equivalent of) 'Save Target As'.
