Default Simple Win 10 question...do I need these....?

I'm just never gunna be directed by Microsoft as to where I keep my files.
I have never, and will never use the following, so can I delete them and get them out of the damn way? They're all empty.

3D Objects - empty (don't even know what they are)
Downloads - empty (set to always go the desktop....where they can be found easily!)
Music - empty (3TB on a separate dedicated external drive)
    Pictures - empty
    Videos - empty

Yes yes, I know I need the Desktop

However, there are some likely suspects for deletion in Documents:
    Custom Office Templates -
    Fax - empty
    Scanned Documents - empty
Passmark (what the hell is that? It contains a folder BurninTest with a file LastUsed.bitcfg 76KB)
FeedbackHub - empty (they really don't want my feedback...)

And while I'm at it, there's a few on C drive that look a bit useless too:
found.000 14.3MB (5 folders down it mentions Windows, so maybe leftover from the install?)
    Perflogs - empty
NULL which is a 320 byte file of...what...exactly?

I'm on about keeping the trees as simple as I can.

OK, so the simple stuff first.

There's some things you should never fork with. That includes Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and to a lesser degree Videos and Music.

If you *properly* relocate them, then that is acceptable. If you just choose to use a different folder for that stuff to land, and don't tell Windows to relocate them, then NO, do NOT just delete them to clean them up. They'll probably come back, but it's just easier to relocate them properly and then everyone is happier.

3d Objects is a default folder for the 3d apps in Windows - 3d Builder, 3d Paint, 3d Viewer. If you opened one of those, there's a good chance that has created the directory in your user profile. You can probably remove it and it'll not come back until something opens that app.

Perflogs is a system folder. It's not essential, but I'd leave it. Some parts of system health may use it if you ever had issues.

Feedback Hub - this is one I can't say I've seen. I don't have that, and I use FBH a lot. I'd still say leave it alone.

Custom Office Templates, Fax, Scanned Documents - all system or Office driven and I'd leave, but I'd trust the file handling to know not to try to write to those locations if you ever used something related to those functions, so if you want it clean, clean away.

Passmark folder - it seems likely it's from a benchmarking app, https://www.passmark.com/ so yeah not Windows related clean up all you like

Found.000 is the results of a chkdsk I think. If you haven't had issues, probably OK to remove. At the moment those files are NOT being referenced by the running OS so no issue from that perspective, even if they are Windows related system files.

NULL that's a weird file name. I'd rename it and see if it came back but likely harmless. I'm guessing its some dodgy app that has sent it's output to NULL instead of sending it to NUL which just drops the content and doesn't show you the status messages from whatever the app ran.

Rightio, thanks poundy. When you say *properly relocate* I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you mean Cut & Paste rather than Copy, Paste, delete old, yes I get the difference there (found that out via a vertical learning curve in Excel 14 years ago), otherwise....

Something else I'm buggered if I ever understood:
Desktop contains "This PC" which contains "Desktop" which doesn't contain "This PC" (as you'd expect an infinite loop to do).

For a moment I thought "AHA! The top Desktop is the Administrator" but no, it contains all the same folders and files that the subsidiary out of This PC › Desktop.

¿Que? This would even confuse Manuel.

FBH made me laugh I just meant FeedBack Hub

Anyway, by "properly relocate", I meant to properly relocate the designated folder from your "normal" location within your profile, to your "desired physical location". There's a trick here, and you kind of hit on it when you looked at the "This PC" then "Desktop".... they are actually shortcuts to folders. To be clear though, it's important to distinguish between the possible places these items appear, and know when you're talking about a folder versus a shortcut to a folder. If you open up Explorer, by default you probably see a shortcut list. But if you press ALT-D (address bar, like in Edge) then type c:\users and hit enter, you get to the USers folder. You should see a list of users who have active accounts on the machine and a "Public" folder (this just contains shared items, so you can store them once and show all users). If you then open up your user account folder, you'll see the list of items you care about (and those you don't and want cleaned up).

So lets right click on the "3d Objects" link. Select the "Location" tab. If you don't see a "Location" tab it's a real directory, not a link. On my default user profile, it shows this as stored in "
C:\Users\brett\3D Objects" (which is the same as where the link is). If you want to relocate it, you use the "Move..." option. That's the way to "properly" relocate them that I mentioned earlier.

The "desktop" loop you went into is because you seem to have a "This PC" link on your desktop, possibly from a previous Windows version? That's not on a default user profile on a Win10 only user, and it's not possible to copy the current link to the desktop, so I can't recreate your situation.

Great, thanks very much poundy. I presume you mean the "move" option in the Properties - Location tab, rather than the "Move to" option in the folder ribbon (but I'll also bet that either could be used - Windows will usually prevent stuff happening if it's not ok to do so).

I totally meant the "Move..." option in the Properties, Location tab after right clicking the folder. "Move To" is more likely just a normal move operation, and will not relocate the shortcut destination properly. The clue to use is that the option doesn't change when you select a different file or folder...

Hi FF, I too am a new user to Win 10. I purchased a new PC a couple of days ago and am now trying to set it up to replicate my Win 7 pc which is still operating. Do you mind if I piggyback some questions in this thread, or would prefer me to start my own thread?

Thanks FF, it will take me a while to construct my post as I am going to include screenshots to help explain the situation more clearly.

As stated earlier I have made the jump to Win 10 after purchasing a new computer (my existing computer is over 10 years old and running Win 7). I have spent the last couple of days getting rid on "bloatware" and reloading my favourite/most used programs. I think I may have made a bit of a mess when I tried to mage my D: drive the default location for all my documents. downloads, music, videos and photos.

Here are some screenshots of the existing setup. I am using screenhunter to take my screenshots.

The folders seen at the top are obviously generated by windows and are located on OneDrive (which I would like to delete).
The Drives below are as follows B: Backup 1 (external HDD), Z: Backup 2 (External HDD), D: Documents (External HDD) this is the drive I want Windows to default to, C: System disk, G: second HDD that came with the computer. The external HDD's were attached to the old PC which made it easy to transfer my documents to the new PC.

    Desktop.jpg

The properties of the Windows generated folders.
    OneDrive.jpg

Here's where I think I went wrong. There are no files under the first Documents, only folders. In the Documents folder under johnw are 2 documents that I generated today. Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos were already on the drive from the old PC. When I tried to make this drive the default drive for my Libraries (Windows doesn't seem to use that term any more) I think they were placed under another documents folder.

    Documents Tree.jpg

I'm much like FF and don't to use the default locations that Windows chooses to save my files.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You can rid those folders from sight by clicking the downwards pointing arrow next to Folders (7), but my experience at trying to move them somewhere else was that Win 10 gave me the middle finger (pointing up...).

Chris Parks sent me this link a few days ago on How to remove Folders from This PC, but I haven't tried it. I have previously found the How To Geek quite reliable though. Perhaps some others may care to comment on the technique?
