Intermittent message with my AOC monitor
I have a 4k Toshiba Laptop with a 4k AOC external monitor hooked up by an HDMI cable. Ever since I've had the monitor it will go black for 3-4 seconds every few hours, but that is not the current issue (although somewhat annoying).
Every few hours or few minutes a panel lights up with the following lines:
D-SUB
DVI
HDMI/MML
DP
and a highlight bar seems to scroll through them, but most often it highlights HDMI. These are connection cable types that it is scrolling through.
The image cannot be screen captured.
Sometimes it is just there for perhaps a minute, other times for 30 minutes. Sometimes it disappears and comes back straight away, other times not for a few hours.
Does anyone have any clues about what is going on here?

Here's your first and only free support call
Yeah you may need to drop it off at my place for "testing" ok
means it's something that has been in place since day 1 - most likely the cablethat sounds like it's toggling in auto-detect mode, and implies to me the cable....
So, I would first ask, what cable are you using? If it's a HDMI, was it a cheap or expensive one? I'd opt for an expensive reputable brand one with a 4K setup like that, because you don't want a dodgy one causing weirdness.
Got a phone with a camera? Always an option
Can I ask what connectors you have on the laptop and what on the monitor? And do you disconnect/reconnect the monitor cable a lot (as it's a laptop)? Often it might make sense to use a different connector, it may be more reliable - I haven't looked at HDMI reliability but it relies on the connector, whereas something else (eg VGA) has additional stability thru the screw-connectors.
Anyway, as a first step, I'd head to JB HiFi or some equivalent and buy a decent replacement cable and see if that helps
Signed, another Brett.

Thanks for that poundy. Yes, using HDMI, but I'm not given to using cheap cables although perhaps it was just one I had on hand. It's reasonably thick though. No decent retail supply of such things up here so I'll see what eBay turns up. I suspect you may be right - it's cycling through looking for a better option than the HDMI.
Come to think of it there's always the possibility of the female HDMI on the laptop or the monitor being dodgy (nothing to look forward to for fixing that).
Edit: no I don't disconnect it much at all. Perhaps 6 times in 2½ years.

not a bad place to start. $20 for one in stock plus whatever it costs to get to you.

Another test you may be able to do is plug the HDMI cable into your TV and use that as the monitor, to see if it still does it - providing your TV has a HDMI port.

Check your power saving settings. It is probably turning things off.
Id also ensure that the cable isnt wiggling at all. HDMI dont have any locking mechanism. They are fiddly little frockers. If they wiggle up/down/left/right at all the can do this.
We watch the F1 on the TV via the laptop. If the cable isnt Just So it can cause probs like you describe.
edit 2: just had a thought. Go into the OSD menu of the monitor, switch the mode from DP1.2 to DP 1.1 in the settings and see if it continues. (you may have 1.3 as well, or others)

The new braided HDMI cable arrived yesterday, so I fitted it. The screen still drops to black as it always has, but I haven't yet seen the scrolling msg come up so maybe that has been fixed.

Confirmed: the new cable means the scrolling msg has disappeared, but screen still blacks out a few times a day.

cool, so scrolling message was the monitor trying to find a valid input at some point, when the cable moved or went dodgy for whatever reason it was.... The black out thing sounds like the old heated circuit issue, goes intermittent, resets itself after not running for a second, then comes into play once things heat up again - but it could be anything really.... Not sure how you'd check if it was heat related, but perhaps if you had a small fan blowing fresh air across the vents on the rear of the monitor it might assist? But that would be a shot in the dark, and not necessarily something that is easy to leave in place longer term.

Well the new thick-as-anything cable didn't solve the problem for very long. 14 months later I've got the msg scrolling again.
Screen scrolling.jpg
I have a feeling that this is not caused by the cable, but rather by the female HDMI port on the laptop, which means it is somewhat pointless replacing the HDMI cable again.
From the Monitor, I can use DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI or 18th Century D-sub. The DVI can at least be screwed down, but as I said I don't think it is the monitor port that is causing the problem.
The Laptop has very few ports:
None on the back
1x USB3 on the left (and a 3.5mm jack for audio)
2x USB3 on the right, plus said HDMI (and an SD Card slot)
I also have a HooToo 7 port powered USB hub. I would prefer not to put the monitor into the hub, but straight into the Puta. I mainly use the hub for various receivers (Logitec, Wacom), occasional CD player, external HDD for backups.
However, I don't even know if I can run this 4k monitor by USB3 - surely if I could there'd be a USB outlet near the other ports, and it would mention USB in that panel that it scrolls through? If I can, and without losing resolution, I'm thinking I could just get a HDMI-USB3 adaptor like this one, but would that be a dodgy solution?
