The sudden drop off is fairly typical of li-ion batteries but eight months of life isn't. I would normally expect at least two years before you start to notice any deterioration. I'd be going back to whomever you bought it from and asking for a replacement.

Sorry, I have come into this rather late, but what is the charge state of the Powerbank you are charging from, is it being regularly recharged?
Is the phone being connected for charging fo a simple fixed duration (say half hour each charge), overnight, or until the phone itself displays that it has achieved 100% charge?
Do you have an Android wall wart charger that you can do an overnight charge with?
I am trying to understand your charge methods to see if the way you are charging is affecting the charge that the phone battery is receiving. Obviously, if the powerbank is in a low state of charge, charging the phone from it would either be much slower or virtually ineffective compared to how it would be with the powerbank fully charged.
The batteries may benefit from a slow charge to equalise all of the cells in the pack. If one cell is a bit iffy, and the others are in good condition, a fast charge may trigger a high voltage condition in the iffy cell which would terminate the charge cycle, leaving the remaining cells short of charge, then when the phone is operating, the high voltage on the iffy cell drops quickly and the whole system starts thinking that the battery is almost flat. A long slow charge should not make the iffy cell spaike to the same extent, and allow the remaining cells to charge properly, ensuring a longer run duration.
I have a 5yo Aldi Median phone and the battery in that is around 80% of new capacity at 5yrs. This phone doesn't get heavy usage during the day and spends the nights on charge on it's wall wart, feeding internet radio into headphones overnight. Always comes off charge at 100%, gets shut down and rebooted straight after (low memory phone and likes to use most of the memory by caching every app overnight), indicates 85% battery after reboot, and hovers around 80% the next evening.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

That's kinda tricky with AliExpress, I should think. At a minimum I'd be without the phone for weeks, plus postage to China.
No you're not late Mal, I only just brought the thread to life again this arvo.
I always wait until the phone is down below 20%, then charge it to 100% from the Powerbank (which gives several charges). Charging the phone takes an hour or less. When the Pb is down to 1 LED flashing (out of 4) I charge that back up (8 hours).
Have just this minute taken it off charge, and the Pb is also now on charge.

You might find that there is something running in the background. If I have location turned on, my Samsung J8 will use more battery than when it is off, which is most of the time.
Not sure if you have tried the turn off and restart to see if that makes a difference.
Good luck finding out the cause.

Did the phone come with a charger?
If so, give that ago instead of the power pack. I have had an issue before in gaining a full charge with a power pack.

I'm not sure yet, but there may have been some weird crud going on (how VERY surprising for me and tech to have a weird relationship!). Late last night I noticed that the fingerprint scanner wouldn't work, so this morning I decided to reboot the phone. The scanner started working, and it may be that the voracious power usage has been corrected (somehow). It's been 26 hours and I still have 61% battery left. Given that 17 of those hours were before I rebooted (and it was dropping like a stone after the recharge yesdy at 16:42) I'm inclined to think the issue may have been resolved simply be rebooting.
How bloody weird is that!
The real test will be after I recharge it next time and see how long that lasts for.
BTW, the fingerprint scanner for unlocking the phone is fantastic. I had to press the finger on the scanner about 8-10 times so it gets a good wide scan (so that you don't have to do a perfectly placed imprint each time), and then repeated the process for my left forefinger. I think it takes up to 6 different fingers if required, but I just left it at those two.
I have noticed that if the fingertip is wet it won't work, and the slightest bit of paint or whatever will also make it fail. That's really good! It means it is highly tuned to my print.
If that doesn't work it will ask for my particular security pattern to be traced over a 3x3 dot matrix. It also asks me to do that every two days, approx. Very good security.
Do other phones have a dot matrix to trace a pattern on?

I find that running a cache cleaner and a memory recovery program and then rebooting each day is virtually essential for my old Medion. It runs a old version 4 Android system and the thing floods cache with a range of stuff that I do not use, but are given safe status by Android, so they cannot be permanently deleted and often can't even be stopped effectively until the next boot.
It is quite likely that if you use the phone to access the internet, the stuff you want will be accompanied by other stuff that runs in the background and chews up battery and chip utilisation. I looked up the phone that you were interested in when you were discussing buying it, and was impressed by its tech specs in comparison to my meagre Medion. Where background programs make themselves obvious with my little box by draining batteries and filling memory, the same programs coould operate on your machine for ages gradually wasting resources without being noticed. Therefore, regular reboots, and checking what is being cached or moved into memory might solve your battery issues for you. This reboot might be a good clue.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Yes I had read that there were a lot of complaints about the location of fingerprint scanners. This one is in the bleeding obvious place of 40mm down from the top and centred. Just a slight movement of the finger from a natural holding position, and it's open for business. The dot matrix is easy enough to do, and in the slightly unlikely event of someone removing my finger to get access to the phone, the dot matrix will kick in after 48 hours and that should keep any call costs to a minimum.

Go to settings search for batter usage. I think some of your apps are running non stop

I tried to do that to about 15-20 apps but the bloody things won't die. Might have to check with the Fish shop instead
In the last 21 hours it has only used 18% of the battery (no calls, just a text or two). So that means in the 48 hours since the last charge it has dropped to 43%, which is how it was before.
I think I can now categorically say it was the reboot that fixed the issue. Seems to be the same old thing: with tech, if weird shight happens, do a reboot before anything else.
Just tried again to close 14 sleeping apps: select them, select "restrict background activity" or "restrict background apps" click ok, go back and they are still sleeping in the background. Anyway, it no longer seems to be an issue.
Thanks to all for the input, again!
