Default Sound card chipset capabilities - how to find them?

Is there a way that I can find out what the physical sound card is capable of putting out (not the Driver).

If I right click on the Speaker Icon in the tray > Open Sound Settings > Device Properties > Additional Device Properties > Advanced tab I can see the drop down says 16 bit 44100Hz, and 16/48000 and then the same for 24 bit but there is nothing about 88000, 96000, 176000 or 192000Hz.

However, AFAIK, they are just the driver stats. How to get to the physical card to find its capabilities? They must surely be higher than 48000Hz on a 2016 Toshiba Laptop?

I don't have a manual, but I found one of sorts online - no mention in there either.

Without knowing what chipset they are using hard to say, but likely to be either AC97 or HD Audio. HD should probably be able to go a bit higher, but AC97 is unlikely to give the resolution much beyond what you have found. It'd be pretty unusual for the driver to be artificially limiting the resolution you could get...

The "sound card" is, of course, not really a separate card. Nor is it a standalone chip. It's actually a very small section of the large, multi-function motherboard chipset.

Short of opening your laptop the best approach to finding out what you have is to google the complete laptop part number. You should be able to find a link that identifies the chipset. From there, go to the chipset manufacturer's website and look up the chipset. It will take some digging but you should be able to find out if the audio codec it iinclude is AC97 or HDA.

If it's actually HDA then you have the new problem of finding a compatible driver.

    Thanks for your replies.

I have resurrected a screenshot of the device manager that I took about 5 months ago when I was having sound problems of a different nature. Nearly halfway down you can see "Device HDAUDIO\FUNC etc"

    Sound card snap.jpg

Does that tell me that it is HDA chipset?

The part number is PSPVTU-00G009. On this site it seems to give the correct spec (except that mine has a 512GB SSD). A little way down it says:
    A COMMANDING SOUND SYSTEM.
The Satellite Radius™ 15 laptop delivers best-in-class audio. Built-in Harman Kardon® stereo speakers and DTS Sound

Surely if it can produce DTS then the card must be able to go to a sample rate of >48kHz? AFAIK, DTS is 96kHz.
