Need Source for 12V AC/DC Switching Adaptor
I have an externial hard drive, which work fine. However the power switching addaptor has died.
I tried an electrics store and Dick Smith, who suggested Jaycar. However they cannot help me either. They say they do not carry dual voltage 6 pin adapters.
Can anyone recomend who would carry such an item. I am in Melbourne.
The exact specification are:
Input: 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz, 03.A
Output: +5V / 2.0A +12V / 2.0A
Output Cable - Mini Din 6 pin

I'd say its probably easier to buy a new external hard drive case. They are about $30-40 at a decent computer shop, or in the mid $20s at a computer fair. Deals Direct have some at $29.

That sounds very much like a power supply that the old telstra cable modems used to use.
You could make a cable from an internal hard drive double adapter cable, that is how I run my external drive.
the yellow is +12v and the black next to it is its negative.
the red is +5v and black next to it is its negative.

I'm with Splinter here - a new case with power supply is so much less stuffing around - which is probably why you can't buy the spare parts.

It seems to be a throw away world. I will save up to buy a new replacement case and cable. Hate throwing away perfectly good things. I will go to a swap meet. Pick up one cheap. Thanks for your suggestions.

Just note that the way the mini-DIN plugs are wired does not appear to be standardised for this use, so check which pins are carrying +5 and +12 volts so you don't get them mixed up or connected in reverse!

Look for an old pc next hard rubish. Pull out the power suply and you have what you need. You will just need to attach the old cable to it.
