Stand Alone Data Monitor
Asking for a friend, she is a single mum on a tight budget wanting to get net (probably NBN it's in her area) for her sons school work.
Budget is non existant which means she is looking at a tight plan with excess data costs - around $2 a gig is the average I have seen.
Is there a stand alone or add on app that will monitor her data usage in real time, ideally a screen in the background, without the need to log in to tool box every half an hour.
Most ISP's I've looked at say the data usage takes two hours to update and at todays speeds two hours could mean going well over before she realises it.
She's using Win10.
Cheers
Dave

It might be better for your friend to stay away from any plan with a high cost for excess data. A plan that throttles back your data speed when the monthly data limit is exceeded could be a good encouragement for the son to only use the net for homework.
Win10 has a built in data monitor -- it's in Settings - Data Usage - Usage Details
I suggest she checks the amount of data she is currently using.
As an example, my usage over the past 30 days, is
Google -- 10 Gb -- internet browsing, I don't stream movies (but I do listen to a few podcasts and on average I probably watch 1 or 2 youtubes a day)
Skype -- 1 Gb -- about 2 hours of calls
Email -- 0.5 Gb
There are two other computers using the same connection, so I'd guess our household data usage is in excess of 30 Gb per month.regards from Alberta, Canada

I agree, I would stay away from any plan that involved excess data charges instead of shaping.
The problem is she can only pay for what she can afford.
I have looked at plans for her, the only thing I can find for $30 is10gig NBN from dodo, the excess data is $2 a gig - I wouldnt touch such a plan or Dodo with a 10 ft pole (or a 4ft russian lol) but she can only get what she can afford.

My fear is that within a blink she will be paying $40+ per month and be worse off than if she's taken a $40 plan with data shaping.
also, with the NBN she can drop the cost of her current landline and some plans bundle calls into the monthly charge.
One tip is to turn off auto updating in Win10.
Another is to treat the connection as "metered" -- I'm a bit vague on the detail, but when on a "metered" connection Win10 and most apps can be set not to access the net.regards from Alberta, Canada
