    I agree with Silent.
I have usually been happy with Snopes and
you implied that there was some risk involved in going to snopes.com to check out hoax emails etc. It's not a matter of "to each their own" at all. If you have a site that gives better information on this type of thing, then share it with us. Spreading alarmist nonsense is not really helpful. In fact, you might say it's no better than the hoax emails we are trying to deal with.
is also right on the money. Reggie, substantiation of you comments is required for them to be given any real consideration.

Got to admit I regularly send the Snopes link to gullible people who should know better, yet continue to send me and others hoax emails that have been doing the rounds for years, thinking they're helping or passing on a bargain, etc.

Genuine hard evidence please. Unsubstantiated gossip, rumour, inuendo, etc will not be tolerated and will be deleted. Genuine evedence by 5 pm today or it's gone from here. You of all people should know better. Especially when a statment like the above could affect hits on their site, their long established reputation, credability and more.

5pm has come and gone and no factual evidence has been forthcoming re the snopes site so the statement has been deleted.

From now on only post factual and proveable statements.

If you can't back up a statement with fact then don't post it here. Take it to another forum that has nothing to do with Woodwork Forums or U-Beaut and peddle it there. I'm not prepared to put my bum in a sling to stop any more members of these forums from getting into strife for false and misleading info.

Been there too many times and I'm over it. Please read this (READ ME) before making another statement like the one that was above.

    Default Hoaxes

Ian, sorry about delay been having my hip checked out today. Here are the sites, that you could get info from:
    antivirus.about.com/od/emailhoaxes/l/blenhoax.htm
www.sophos.com/security/hoaxes/ I found this site extremely good.
    www.virusbtn.com/resources/hoaxes
    www.McAfee.com/AU
www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/hoaxes/hoax.asp has House call, is very useful for detecting viruses
All the main antivirus software providers also provide virus lists and hoax info
Again as I stated in my post If in doubt delete.

Snopes is an urban legend resource site - so it takes in more than just virus hoax emails - it also hits all those emails forwarded by people who take stories in No Idea (err, sorry, New Idea) and Take 5 (a reference to the number of braincells used in fact checking, perhaps??) as gospel truth.

Basically, any email that involves 'missing person', 'terminally ill', 'cancer', 'coke', 'help X achieve their goal' or even those little plastic tags on the end of bread wrappers should be checked via Snopes first.

I tend to regard any virus bulletins put out by the larger virus solution peddlers as suspect until independantly checked with something like http://www.us-cert.gov/ - but I'll usually get better warnings from slashdot anyway.

The best fix for email concerns is simply don't use any software made by Microsoft. There are other email programs out there that are far more secure, Thunderbird and Pegasus are two that immediately spring to mind.
