A virtual machine is a bit of software that emulates the hardware of a PC and can run it's own, separate version of the operating system.

While they do a great job, it's not really going to help your situation and only complicates things. Not being a Windows person, I can't make any suggestions for fixing your speed/virus issues.

My main server (and my laptop) run the Linux operating system. As there are a few bits of software I need to run that only run on Windows, I have virtual machine software installed that lets me run a copy Windows XP as though it was just another program. That copy of XP thinks it's running on 'real' hard ware so works as normal. I also run Windows 7 and some other variants of Linux.
