I have a win 98 PC and i am trying to save to a usb (from floppy)
However I get the following when I plug in the USB stick.
Add new hardware

So how can i get the USB to work.

Win98 will need the driver specific to the usb stick you have. You may never find a suitable driver for a modern usb esp. if it's too large capacity-wise.
The u wasn't so universal then.
Just found an old reference in my archives. This link has a download for a generic driver. It may work for you.
Good luck with the language - just follow your nose.

Yes so I am beginning to find out, via google searches. I have a number of usb sticks I just simply bought them from anywhere. One is a lexar so maybe the site has something.
I also tried copying onto a disk, and when i tried on the win 98 se i got the following message " You do not have permission to open file, see owner of file or admin to obtain permission"
maybe someone can tell me how to overcome that one.
This is a favour for someone but it is causing a headache, starting to feel I should have kept my mouth shut.

It Should just work under Win 98. It was Win95 that had first version (didn't work) and SR2 (service realease 2).
You'll need the driver for the USB card. If its part of the motherboard you'll need to look on the motherboard for a maker and model and go to their website.
Does it work with other USB devices?
Or try How to Enable Universal Serial Bus Support for microsoft help.

What size is the USB drive? I have a vague feeling that Win 98 might be size limited in what you can plug in.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

What are you actually trying to achieve macklin ?
Swapping files is one thing. Using them could be a different kettle of fish.
If you want to move files between disparate systems there are several alternate ways you can do this, just depends on how much work you effort to put into the task. Just how also depends on the ages of both computers and what other resources you have.
Internet - various ways including google docs, other cloud solutions, email, ftp.
Direct connection via serial cables or twisted ethernet
Network via hub/switch
Slave Win98SE hard disk to newer computer.
Fit Win98SE to external drive caddy connected to newer computer.
First method is the way I mostly do small transfers now.
Next two are more complicated.
Last two methods are my favourite for transferring larger amounts.
I'm not sure how a Win98SE box even knows about files permissions. Maybe I've just read your post the wrong way.
Fly is correct. Win98 can be made to use usb. You just need to set it up correctly.
