And to add to my woes, the videos are stop start.

I don't have many lights on on my NBN connection box, could this be the stop start problem?

    Reboot?

Check the resolution youtube has selected. A slow network connection will make YouTube select lower resolution which will look blurry.

    Also try rebooting the router...
You could also try a speed test on your connection.

Go to history and click on clear recent history, then reboot both modem and puter

    All sounds like network performance.

Try rebooting the nbn box and the router, then speed test.

Reboot the PC and Router, you have buffering.

Have you used up your monthly data allowance and been throttled back to an out of data speed limit?

Yes, it's probably youtube automatically selecting a lower resolution because it's not getting the internet speed it needs for higher. Go to Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and click the button. Compare the results to what you're paying for / expecting.

Yeah just so you know, it's certainly "expectation" not a paid thing. NBN has adopted many older technologies that impose limitations below what you can pay for.

Don't get me started! NBN MTM what a joke! Here I am, benefactor of a $50b+ project, with a maximum obtainable 30/5 connection. And it would cost me nearly $30k to get it upgraded to what they should have built (and could have built, for basically the same money!) to start with. #rage.

Not all speed problems are the fault of the NBN as I recently found out. We have had a continual history going back decades of phone connection problems most of which has been caused by poor connections done by Telstra, it works OK for some years and then they have to come back and fix the connection on our property again and again. After the NBN was connected the maximum speed we coud get was about 20/9 and so I shrugged my shoulders said that was better than the ADSL and got on with life. The final stage of our connection was underground and during driveway renovation they managed to dig it up with no possible way to re-connect so we had to run the wire overhead from our private pole to the house. When it was all connected which we ourselves did this time with rock solid connections our speed literally doubled 45/18 which I thought was fairly good seeing it only cost us about $50 to do. We had previously abandoned the state of the art (at the time) cat 5 phone network in the house due to noise issues and it was no longer needed anyway. The lesson is make sure the wiring is in good order and if it is any sort of age it most probably needs attention.
