Now there's a new forum under computers Linux

I have tried different versions like hum starts with M now taken over darm ol timers again load it onto PI Thats it Mandrake now called Mandriva

UBUNTU I couldn't get to do anything after down loading it buring ISO etc CD etc.

Greatest is the nearly all software is FREE and no restrictions well nearly none more and more are using it and I want to be one.

I tried that system 3 or 4 years ago on an old laptop I couldn't get it to work. I will give it another go.

Had a look at it, sounds good.
Setup sounds easy and theres open source software available too.

How easy is it to set up a home network?

Can you setup with 2 os's so I can still use a couple of windows or dos programs when neeeded.?

If any one has tried linux and had a bad experience then they should try Ubuntu.

You can play with a live disk before you install (imagine going to bunnings and they let you go and get some wood off the shelf and try out a few router bits in their store and then just walk away because they are not what you want).

You can even get away with not installing and just use the live disk that does not do any thing to your existing installation.

It does run slower as live disk because CDs are much, much slower than hard disks.

The beauty of open source software is that you can get in and change things to suit your needs.......kind of like jig building.

There is a package called "ubuntu-restricted extras" that if you install will allow you to play a lot of different media formats and web plugin things that do not work out of the box.

Give it a few days and you will start noticing that it is a lot faster too.

Put a bit of time into learning a few commands and it gets a lot faster still.

No more automatic updates, no more "do you want to report this error" messages.

Run it a couple of years and you will have forgotten about system crashes. 99.9% of the virus and malicious crap out there is not aimed at you any more.

Feels good eh?

I havent tried home networking yet but will give it a go some time. At the moment just learning the ropes. The great thing is that you can leave windows on the comp and have both, so if you get into strife or want to use a windows specific application you can. I have not seen one of those application error thingies yet . The only problem I have come across is logging into ebay, it just wont let me, I am sure I will figure it out though . Word, powerpoint and excel (which is what I use the most) are no longer needed. Open office will let me work with all of those files with no problems .

I wish I had done this earlier.

Just can't get my head around it yet. Couple of questions. Do you need to be on the net?(I have another computer I would like to try it on). What happens to all your programs like Sketchup, Autocad and the like? Can you transfer your programs over from windows? If your on the net do you have to get everything up and running, Like mail and so on?

To run windows apps in Linux, you'll need to install an emulator (sorry, API compatibility layer) - this will let you run them as if they were running on a virus prone and poorly secured environment. You wont notice any performance hit.

There's a list of all the known working under Wine apps on that site.

I need windows for my CAD program, I've got so used to it I can't contemplate a change. I also try to check out how my website looks in IE. There are always the odd thing that Firefox can fix on the fly, but IE is less easy to get right.

I have a dual boot system, I get a screen at start up that lets me choose between WinXP and Linux (it defaults to Linux after 2 seconds).

This system works for me, I copy and transfer stuff from one to another via a memory stick. A bit of a pain, but I only fire up XP on the odd occasions now.

If there was no such thing as the Internet I would be still using XP, but there is, so I have adapted to the faster and more secure environment of Linux for almost everything.

Ideal situation for me would be two separate computers, which I had running for about 5 years. One running XP not connected and ran perfectly. But when I had to access the net via IE I did the dual boot.

You can also use Virtual PC from Microsoft or VMWare which will run both operating systems at the same time. You can use Linux for most things and switch instantly to Windows when you need to. You will need extra memory to do this tho.

And ubunutu unleashes your pc, becasue in almost all cases no need to run virus checkers and firewalls. These really slow down things in windoze.

I think I'll install Ubuntu on my wife's computer. She only surfs and does email.

Guys stil cant get ubuntu to let me login into ebay or netbank, it may well be my set-up but something worth considering if you are planning on deleting windows. I can get onto most other sites though, cant explain it!
I have also realised that ubuntu comes with lots and lots of software and utilities that can be installed as an option (graphics, desktop publishing, etc).
