    Question Vista Problem

A couple of days ago our Asus laptop, which has Windows Vista installed, did two strange things.

#1 the keys with number on them in the qwerty typing area started to put up the numbers.

#2 At the same time all the icons disappeared from the desktop.

The first problem was remedied but the second remains. Any clues from the "puter literati?

Can still use internet because the icon for google chrome is on the bottom toolbar.

    Artme,
Right click on any open space on your desktop ( I assume there's plenty of that at the moment) and select "View" and make sure the "Show Desktop Icons is checked"

The numeric keypad has been turned on somehow. You must have bumped the Function key (fn) and another key somewhere.

Look for the (num lk) key, usually in the top right of the keyboard.

Then press and hold the (fn) key, press the (num lk) key (a light may go off somewhere) then release all keys.

    Thumbs up

Forgot I had posted the question here

Fixed the number bit but the desktop is still in limbo. Wife's cousin is a "puter guru. he fixed desktop very briefly. Sometimes the Icons flash across the screen but, that's it.

Did you do a "Restore" Arthur? If not its worth a try. Always try the simple things first.

Is it possible that a different user acocunt has been created/corrupted? If Vista thinks that it needed a new profile for some reason it would do this with the icons on the desktop, though your documents folders and other such profile settings would also be affected. Check the C:\Users\ directory to see if there are extra entries in there beyond your username and the system accounts.

    Cheers,
