Watching "elementary" downloads on TV
Just had a bit of success I thought I would share.
Teenage grandson alerted me to an American TV series called Elementary which features a modern day manic Sherlock Holmes and a female Dr Watson (Lucy Lui) who are now working in the USA.
It really is a brilliant series, with lots of twists and turns, worth watching. Not shown on Australian TV. Each episode is a complete story, but you need to see Ep 1 to get the full background.
I have downloaded a number of episodes of Series 1 using torrents and Vuze, (each video file is .mkv format) and then used subscene website to get a subtitle .srt file for each episode.
I then burned these to a BD Bluray disc using Windows burn to disk feature, where you right click on all the files and select Send To... and select your disc drive. Once that is done, and when asked to view the files ready to burn to disk, you hit "Burn to Disk" on the top menu bar. I have a Bluray burner on my desktop that handles 25 and 50GB Bluray BD disks.
The files are burned as a data disk ( not a video disk) and when I put this disk in my Sony Bluray player connected to my TV, it allows me to select and play any episode I want, complete with subtitles!!!
If you don't have a Bluray burner, you can do the same with DVD disks. The bigger the disk, the more episodes you can get on that disk, so go for the dual layered(DL) disks. The episodes I downloaded are 1.5GB each, so the quality is quite good.
These should keep me going until the full series is released on DVD or Bluray, hopefully with Australian region capability.regards,
Dengy

Yes it is a good show, not sure on what stations you get where you are, but it screens on Ten, Sunday evenings down here in Victoria.
Is also available on iTunes but then you have to pay for itCheers

Thanks DJ, I stand corrected.
I just looked up the weekend TV program, and it is on Sun night on Ten here too, up to Episode 5 this weekend. I normally watch ABC, and avoid the commercial channels because of all the very annoying ads.
The downloads I did don't have any ad breaks.
Normally I would wait for the series to end and get the DVD set, but this series was so highly recommended I decided to get with it.
I have downloaded some iTunes of other series, but they don't come with subtitles, and I am hearing impaired so subtitles are essential.regards,

There are sites such as srtfiles.com that help you find subtitles for programs; also, the KMediaPlayer will automatically search for subtitle files for whatever you are viewing.

Buy yourself a PVR (or HDD recorder). Mine has a DVD burner.
I store whole series on mine and watch in a marathon of sorts.
Or buy a set top box that accepts USB. They can be had for as little as $20 commonly around $40 from Dick Smith, JB, etc. These usually write in a format that can be read on computer.

Been watching the series since it started here.
In case you miss any show during the week on any Free to air TV Freeview then go to "TV Shows" and then the pop down "Catch Up" This take you to various stations/chanels most shows remain available for week only.
For something completely different SMH TV yep thats Sydney Morning Herald TV movies, Doco's etc. Have watched a number of the movies since Dec they change listing some still there we won't watch. Some doco's which were good to comes down to personal taste. be prepared for adds if you do not have add blocker installed.

Why mess around burning disc's, I found this tiresome and messy.
Get a media player like the link below, this takes a hard drive and plugs in to your tv allowing you to play downloaded files without burning.
I have the hard drive next to the tv with the media player and a USB cable running back to the pc and just swap the hard drive from the media player to the pc to copy files over.
Both my brother and I use the Noontec and have found it reliable and easy to use.
Cheers

Thanks for this info, smidsy, much appreciated. Will it play a .mkv video file and a corresponding .srt subtitle file together?
