    Default WD Mybookworld NAS

I am looking for someone who might have one of these units or someone who is smart in Linux. I have lost all access to mine across the network but the drives still appear to be OK and while I have backed up a lot of stuff I have lost access to the later files in the last few months. Has anyone got one I could utilise to put the drives in either for a lend or to buy? Alternatively the OS is Linux and I believe it can be utilised to get into the drives and get the files off them. My missus will kill me if I don't get her embroidery files back, help a person under threat!!

Some of the NAS boxes use proprietary storage systems that need hardware to decode it. I had a bad experience with a 'backup' unit that striped data in a unique way that was unrecoverable when the controller died. Maxtor decided they would replace the hardware if it was in warranty but would do nothing for the 1TB of data.

Suggest you find another box and insert your drives and back up the data elsewhere. It is possible to get a utility that can read Linux drives in windows so try there first.

Maybe some help here: How To Recover Data From WD My Book World Edition NAS Device - Hacking WD MyBook World Ed

Thanks for the reply. I would prefer another box as a first choice but will keep my options open. I have Ubuntu 11 but it is unusable and I don't know how to use the command line in it even if it were usable. Someone who is more familiar with Linux would be my choice if need be. I literally have not got the time to learn and figure it all out so would recompense someone for their time.
