Thread: Win 10 PC not going to sleep
-
25th March 2020, 09:12 PM #16
On several occasions today I have been away form the computer for more than 30 minutes and each time I returned the computer had entered sleep mode as it was supposed to do. I am quite confident that the issue has been solved, thanks again to those involved.

I think that I may have an answer as to what has been keeping my PC from entering sleep mode. This morning when I woke my computer I noticed that the scheduled backup had not been performed.
I have Acronis True Image and use it to do backups on a regular basis:
I backup my photos on odd numbered days, beginning at midnight.
I backup my docs, music and videos on even numbered days, beginning at 3 AM.
I backup my system file on the 1st, 11th and 21st of each month, beginning at 3 AM.
These are differential backups by the way.
I need to find a way/setting to wake the computer to perform the backup, and then put it back to sleep.
Some additional information:
By default Acronis ran a backup after the computer had been active for a couple of minutes. Since the backup was done the PC is no longer entering sleep mode. I did the powercfg - requests enquiry and found that the \device\harddiskvolume4......... has returned.
Some more additional information:
I did a restart of the PC and the \device\harddiskvolume4......... message is no longer coming up when I do a request. The reboot must have cleared the problem
I don't like Win 10, I put off installing it on my old PC, but when that one bit the dust I really had no options left but buy a new computer and of course it came with Win 10 Home. I am wondering if it is worth upgrading to the Pro edition.

Did you disable the Wake Timers in Power Options?
If so, go back into Power Options (Advanced settings of the Edit Power Plan control panel -> Sleep) and re-enable these for Plugged in mode under the power plan you are using.
See if that fixes Acronis.
( BTW - I do hope that you first tried rebooting your machine prior to trying the other things discussed above ) The majority of errant computer issues are resolved by a simple re-boot!! In the immortal words of Roy from The IT Crowd - "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" )

Win 10 would have to be the most stable MS OS yet.
The Pro version gives you more features, but won't help with these sort of issues. They both use the same core components - with Pro more components are enabled. I venture to suggest that you will not need any Pro features (unless you want Bitlocker encryption on your HDD. Most of the rest are designed to enable IT pros to manage the OS in a business environment.
Most people I have dealt with who complain about Win10 have:
Connected very old peripherals; and/or
Installed old incompatible drivers; and/or
Installed poorly written software from shareware sites etc; and/or
Installed pirated/cracked software; and/or
Fiddled with advanced settings (such as registry entries) without understanding what they were doing - blindly following some post on the Internet; and/or
Deleted/moved system files without understanding what they were doing; and/or
Pushed the limits of a homebrew system by overclocking or similar.
Not saying that's you, but I will say the OS is VERY solid. Of course there are exceptions, and some hardware vendors do a better or worse job of integration. A poor job of parts & driver selection can lead to a less stable system. And yes - occasionally MS stuff up an update that causes some problems.

Should I select Important Wake Timers Only? If so what determines exactly what is an important wake timer?

I have no doubt that it is a very stable OS system Ross, my previous OS Win 7 was pretty stable too.
My big complaint with Win 10 is that things I neither want, nor need are forced on me.
Why does windows think I need a Camera Roll, or Saved Pictures folder. I am perfectly capable of downloading photos from my camera into a folder of my choosing.
A small thing I know, but just one of many annoying things that go with Win 10. I am using a PC for eff sake not a mobile phone, they're programs, not applications.

No - just enable wake timers & see if that fixes it.
(Important wake timers are those the MS use for waking the machine to complete updates and the like - they can't usually be over-ridden. These are a new class of timer that were introduced in Win10 - I doubt that Acronis uses them.)

The issue is that the OS is designed to be used by hundreds of millions of people. What is unimportant and an annoyance to you is likely of key importance to tens or hundreds of thousands of others - and vice versa. Many things that you think should be able to be disabled may not be as they may impact supportability and the ability of various standards & protocols & development guidelines that third party developers of software & hardware rely on for their systems.
Other things are there simply because they are very popular for the majority of punters.
It IS possible to suppress most of the UI elements, the ability to do so is something that is more easily available in Pro & Enterprise versions (businesses often want to control how the UI s presented to various classes of user) ; but if you do so you better know what you are doing in terms of managing Group Policy etc. (Note I said "more easily", not "easy") In corporate settings systems go through strict testing regimes, and the installed software on systems is a known and tightly managed environment.
If you don't want the Camera Roll & Saved Pictures folders simply uninstall the Photo & Camera applications respectively. Or you can just move the folders to another location if you don't want to delete the applications (these applications require these folders & will recreate it if deleted - moving is OK)
(BTW - " Applications" and " programs" are synonyms)

The Photos app is called Photos; aaaaand - surprisingly - the Camera app is Called Camera
You can uninstall the camera app from Add remove programs utility
Photos uninstall requires using powershell
1 Type the word Powershell into the run box, select Run as Administrator
2. Type the command:
Code:get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage
3. Close pwershell windows - its gone
You can freinstall it from MS App store if you want it back
