Thread: Windows 10

I've still got two Windows 7 PCs.

I absolutely hate the Win8 and later start page with all of the purple boxes. I'm completely lost. I've been working with Windows PCs for twenty years and always defaulted to the bottom left corner to initiate just about everything. Not having that there totally throws me and I immediately get frustrated.

And now, as I write this, for the first time, I totally understand my dad's struggle with his iPad...

Win XP was good. Win8 and 10 is all designed for tablets and phones, works like crap on a desktop.

Win 10 lets you discard the tablet/touch interface forced on you by Win 8; Metro is no more.

The annoying charms bar on the side is gone.

And the start menu is back. Windows Store apps show up in the start menu, but you can delete them (except I liked the Weather one so I moved that to the desktop).

However, if you are using the Home version, you get no choice about installing Windows updates - they will be automatically installed for you, full stop. If you've never used regedit, msconfig, have never unhidden protected operating system files, called up the command prompt or never changed the folder view options so that file extensions are shown, this is probably a good thing.

The finished install size comes in at just over 15 gig, which is about 5 gig smaller than a Windows 8 install.

It also continues to use the good file copy system from Windows 8, not the guess-and-pray abomination (2 minutes remaining...30 seconds remaining...4 hours 15 seconds remaining... 50 minutes remaining...complete) from Windows 7.

Even more importantly, it marks the end of Internet Explorer...(the new Microsoft Edge browser downloads Firefox quite well, though).

On the local news this week was a story about a bloke who installed it & left it running over night... much to his wife's disgust, it found his collection & made it into a screen saver slide show.

I installed Win 10 on my laptop a couple of days ago before installing it on my desktop. I'm glad I did as I don't really like it, Had a look at Edge, the new browser, couldn't find a way to import my favourites and bookmarks from Firefox, so didn't bother with it. Firefox runs on it, but very slowly. Itunes only loads under Administrator, and the music app couldn't/wouldn't find my music on my home network. On the plus side the rollback to Win7 was painless and went very smoothly. I could probably get used to it, but I can't be bothered, I'm happy with Win7 and see no reason to change.

Edit: A couple of other things, It had my location as Spain, and had reset my date format to MM/DD/YYYY and US English. What the hell, couldn't even get my settings right .

Apparently they left in all the spying stuff in it that they do for China market.
You need to kill off all the spying stuff (not possible with win 10 itself).

So search for windows 10 spying, there are several apps that can turn off all the nasties.

I have 8 and it keeps trying to update? Can inturn this feature off.

It takes 4 hours to process all the updates only to not work. It takes just as long to revert back to no updates. Then it wants to update again

Maybe I am getting old but I have not seen the need to update Windows from XP.

Bought my wife a Netbook for when we are travelling, it runs Win 7, she hates it as do I.

Took one look at Win 8, formed the opinion that Microsoft should have bought an Android tablet and learned one or 2 things from Android.

Both our notebooks as well as our main desktop still run Win XP, my CNC computer still runs Win XP.

Our phones, 2 tablets and my in-car GPS/Radio head unit all run Android.

I have better things to do with my time than trying to work out the "logic" behind the latest and greatest" MS operating system. I don't care whether it is free or not, I just cannot work out this need for people to "upgrade" for seemingly no gain and get frustrated in the process!

We bought a new laptop with Windows 8/ 8.1, looked on youtube and found a small download on classicshell.net which makes the computer look and feel like windows 7. I'm sure there would be one for windows 10.

I half agree, I run 8 machines with XP (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).
I have 1 notebook that runs win 7, Only use that when I go away fishing (not to fish with but keep in touch with forum).
But I have recently purchased a plotter cutter that does not have drivers for XP.
They say microsoft don't support XP so neither do we.
The big corporate companies are still using XP on their older machines.
You'll get this more and more I guess and at some point the next printer or scanner will not work under XP and you'll be forced to upgrade.

And why didn't we:
You never upgraded in the past until SP1 or SP2 came out.
Vista was a dog.
7 was ok.
8 was useless unless you installed classic shell (which is why 8.1 was released -8 with a desktop)
when something better comes along I'll go along.

Yes, but then there is a reason to upgrade. I am not against upgrades, just cannot see why people blindly upgrade for no reason at all.

While we were away a couple of months ago my wife wanted a printer/scanner (she sells on Ebay and needs one for that) bought a Canon with WiFi online from JB HiFi ($69) , picked it up the next day in Toowoomba, worked first time on both our XP notebooks.

In my opinion, every thing from XP has been CRAP.

You have the ability to roll-back Win 10 for 30 days after install.

G'day Dave,

While I have W7 there may be similarities from this site that can help you stop W10. I followed it all the way through and haven't seen it come back. I had not reserved W10 but I caught it at 65% downloading.
