Windows 8 - I've got it, but I don't get it

Mossyblog, I'm so glad you fessed up to being heavily involved. I haven't seen so much tech speak, jargon, and acronyms in a single article since I left IBM

An interesting read, but that's the "how' and the 'why" of it all.
At the end of the day, I reckon the "what" remains a bit of a mystery to the average punter.

haha sorry yeah, when I first moved to Seattle and went to my MS 101 day i heard so many made up words / acronyms etc that I sat there thinking "Oh dear god what have I done"... then 6 months later i'm talking in a coded language nobody but Microsoft staff understand

The "What" was kind of a panic moment for the company. I mean if you look at Metro its essentially just wireframes colored in, so in a way it solved some issues around getting "designers" to work with developers that helped both out. I call the design style of metro "paint by numbers" which is why it's so shallow in execution around apps (ie the features in apps are weak and to lightweight).

I have some friends taking over the design reigns now and i'm hoping they can influence its direction going forward but yeah, you are correct the average punter sees windows 7 then windows 8 and wonders if was being past around in executive & design meetings during its creation. Stilnox

To be fair i don't trust Apple, Google, Microsoft, Adobe etc.. it helps keep a level attitude

... Microsoft have also as of late lost far too much of their talent to competitors and as such have created this vortex of failure... ie Surface launch was a disaster (still is), Windows Phone launches have been a disaster, killing of the developer engine(s) that lets people create XBOX games is a disaster etc... basically they are going through some sort of metamorphosis ..only will it be a butterfly or another IBM?

As for Windows XP .. if it aint broke dont fix it, but keep in mind you will be frozen in time going forward as once companies subscribe to Windows XP numbers dropping in marketshare they'll stop supporting... (which means new printers blah blah wont eventually support XP at all)

I have messed around in W8 enough now to be comfortable enough to know I can mostly do without Metro ..Windows+D shortcut is your friend. There are some things that I like about W8 though ..it quicker than W7 to boot and shutdown, and it seems to benchmark better than W7 in running high end games but I really do detest that bloody "charms" menu. Who the hell thought that "charms" was a good idea?? - must be the stilnox

A very close friend of ours has just moved on from a desktop 200Mhz Pentium with XP to a new laptop with Windows 8.
She could have had 7, but at the additional cost of a rebuild, so no choice really.

In helping her over the learning curve my advice to her has been to forget Metro, only go there when you have no choice, then do what you have to do and get out. Just behind the veneer of Metro lurks Windows 7 and you'll be relatively comfortable there.
