xmas present
I was given a new computor , a present from eldest son,why I don't know as the Dell (2 years old)was doing as much as my wife and I required.
This new unit is a ASUS Eee Box , small in size only about 230 x200x30mm, all he has told me about it is uses little power any very quiet ,no heat.
I think the position he holds ,has access to all this type of gear.
I should add he set it up and transferred all our information over as I would not have any idea what to do.
any comments regards nine Fingers

Best thing you got rid of the Dell
I see why Neil-U-beaut dropped the Eee so many have taken it on in some way
I checked out the Asus tiny gee my portable HDD is about that big can't see any DVD/CD-Rom in it guess that means an external sitting on the desk a laptop may have been a better choice my opinoin
Edit 1655hrs Just had a read of a review of the Eee for over $400 there's a lot missing

I think I prefer the Asus eee 901.
It's a lightweight portable (netbook) which would be handy to have instead of lugging a laptop about.Geoff

Hi,
My understanding is that the EEEPC is a desktop version of the Atom powered Netbook compact notebooks. I am writing this on one of the Acer netbooks.
The Atom is a low power/low performance chip specifically intended for non intensive applications. My Acer is great as a second computer, but for some of my work I would be very concerned if it was my only computer. Works well for general web browsing, email using Outlook, occcasional Word/Excel work not involving photos etc. Not really good for anything associated with Cad and Drawing, photo manipulation etc.
I live in a 4 computer/2 person household (1 5yo $200 laptop as a central data server, 1 2yo Hi Perf desktop, 1 3 yo fairly powerfull 17in laptop, and the Netbook). Anything particularly heavy duty gets done on either the Desktop or the Laptop, the light duty stuff, watching woodwork videos in bed etc can be done on the netbook. I also have mobile internet access which I can use with the laptop or netbook when travelling.
If you find any degree of clash between yourself and spouse about computer access, I would suggest storing all data on the Dell, running a common software set on both machines, and setting the EEEPC to access and store data on the Dell. Then the Dell remains the primary computer, but if you both need/want computer access at the same time, one uses the Dell and the other uses the EEEPC.
This assumes that the EEEPC has its own monitor, mouse and keyboard. It gets to share the DVD drive from the Dell, overcoming that shortcoming.
Thats my 2c worth, admitting that I don't know your families specific needs and requirements. However, overall, running an Atom based computer is largely similar to running an early Pentium based computer, say about 2000 vintage, but with lower power consumption.
