A Visitors Perspective Of Bike Paths
This is an interesting view from a Dutch visitor but pretty much sums things up for here.

I have enjoyed cycling a few times in Holland and it sure would be nice to have those facilities here but then who pays for it?
If we did a taxation comparison we'd find the Dutch pay a lot more tax, and they have much smaller in area and hence higher density cities to deal with

But you would not enjoy it during winter in Amsterdam. I still have vivid recollection of cycling to the other side of the city to go to school through that brown half frozen mush when the council sprinkled salt over the frozen icy roads.
There weren't many cycle path in Amsterdam when I grew up there.

The tax system there is interesting but what is the Premium Insurance thing, is that like our Medicare levy?

Having a bit more money to play with doesn't hurt either, BTW (GST) rate of 21% and a marginal income tax rate of 52% (cuts in at about $A75K).
On top of that there is state pension contribution of another approx 10%, but pensions are not means tested.
Now, whether the Dutch government and its' bureaucrats spend all that money wisely............who knows?
But as BobL said, the Netherlans is a tad smaller, about 1/2 the size of Tasmania, with a similar population to Australia, so it is a bit easier to install bike paths!
