$89 Shop Vac is back. From Sat 9th June. I've had one for a year, and am satisfied with it (for the $$). It's pretty loud, and the filter needs cleaning 3 or 4 times before the container is full, but on a "value for money" rating, it's a 10/10.

Sometimes I wonder just how much value cheap vacuum cleaners represent. Sure they pick up chips and visible dust, but they also generate more invisible dust particles than they pick up and whatever they pick up they spray them all around the shed.
Most people have no clue that cheap vacuum cleaners generate more fine particles than they pick up. They do this because their filters are totally inadequate and their high air speed velocity action smashes all particles into each other and turns visible dust into invisible dust.
Value for health wise money, maybe a broom, dustpan and brush, which still picks up chips and visible - albeit not as well as a cheap vacuum cleaner but at least it does not generate more invisible dust.

Agreed Bob, my point is they they are better than nothing at all, particularly for sanding (I still wear a mask with a vac). Yes, I know that your also talking about the residual dust after the event, but I keep the mask on for a while, have a fan blowing to the outside.
I'm actually getting a Festool vac, and this one will be retired to other duties. It saved me a lot of crap for that 12 months, but yes, understand the premise of your point, and it's a very valid point to make for the unwary.

Sorry I disagree. A cheap vacuum cleaner makes MORE invisible dust than it captures and worse still it sprays it all over the shed. It may be better of in terms of ones health not to not use one at all, and just sweep up the visible stuff with a dustpan and broom.

I agree with Bob generally, however, when I use my disc sander for blanks it is not covered by my DE and fine dust flies everywhere, albeit I don't use it for long. I will get the Aldi vacuum to reduce this dust and still wear a powered mask when using it. It will propbably help stopping later dust settlement over my electrical gear.
