Thread: Aldis crazy tool prices

Mike, as Ozkaban said in post #4, the trick with Aldis is to sort the cheap crap from the low priced excellent value for money:
$50 microwave (6 months ago) oven was just fine. Quality to Price ratio very high.
$100 cyclone vac (yesterday) gives me good suck(?). Quality to Price ratio very high. Good ergonomics too, but hose a bit flimsy, and a foot too short.
$10 mag set (s/s round bowl, s/s rect.tray, 2 bars) excellent. Quality to Price ratio ridiculously high.
$15 vices (clamp or suction, I got one of each just now), not too bad (typical chinese rough quality). Quality to Price ratio quite acceptable.
$15 S/s pet food twin bowl. Excellent. Quality to Price ratio very high.
$10 Paint brushes x 5 (2 x 50mm, 2 x 33mm, 1 x 25mm, pure bristle, gel grip handle). Excellent. Quality to Price ratio ridiculously high.
and so it goes on.
When it comes to food, it's great. "Smooth Blue" cheese is not just similar to Blue Costello, it IS BC. Different shape & pack, half the price. The Choceur and Moser Ruth HUGE range of chocolates is the same quality as Lindt and about half the price. You might just have to trust me on that one - when it comes to choc I really do know what I'm talking about, and probably shouldn't.
Their ground coffee is about 90% the quality of Lavazza, and exactly half the price. Far, far better than Vittoria's bitter offerings.
All academic really as you don't have them yet (they'll be there). It's a matter of getting used to the different brand names, and trying a few things out. Those that know won't go anywhere else.
Cheers, Brett

+1 for the Smooth Blue, love it (but shouldn't).
Most of the things we buy from Aldi have been of good to excellent quality, I am now talking food and other "supermarket" items. There have been very few things that we bought and said we wouldn't again. Their paper towels are better than anything else you can buy anywhere and are great for my pen turning (CA application) far better than anything else I have tried. Their fruit and veg is way cheaper than the other stores and so on.
They must be good, our relatively small town, 90,000, is just about to get it's third Aldi, that compares with 3 Woolworths

Both Albury stores and the one Wodonga store did not have the verniers either.
Apparently they could be in in a couple of weeks, when I just know they will be put out on a table with no advertisment and will be gone before I realise they are there.

I was just in Aldi George st, Parramatta. They had a bucketload of the $20 calipers. I already have two different ones at home so don't need a third..
I did pick up the little box of drawers thing, some paint brushes and a couple of the boxes of screws though. Plenty left of most things.
Cheers,
Dave

Cheap paint brushes are great for duting and rough jobs. You can also get el cheapos at Bunnies and places like Crazy Clarks. Costs more in turps to clean them than the brush is worth! Just toss 'em out.
Keep an eye out for their rotary hammer drill bits when they come up again. Great value for money!

I got the Butane Gas Soldering Iron for $39.95. Far better quality than my Weller portasol that I bought 6 years ago and only lasted 14 months. This one is made in Tawain as well. for me.

As an aside, most of my postings get less than 100 views, and less than 5 or 6 replies. This thread has had almost 1100 views and 38 replies to date. This has confirmed something for me: we woodies are a bunch of scabs!

The problem with Aldi's specials listed is that not all the stores carry them. I went to our local Aldi Store and they didn't have any of the items on the list at the start of this thread. The WD 40 would have come in handy while I get my flood affected gear back into service.
I would have to search out a bigger store and that is not worth the travel time...it's a bit hit and miss at the stores.

Digital calipers now in stock
Hey people,
I was in Aldi Broadmeadows this arvo and picked up a couple of digital calipers for $20 each. They had squillions of them. Back when they were advertised, an employee told me they hadn't cleared customs and that this was not uncommon. Whatever the reason, the Broady store now has heaps.
I'm planning on modifying one of them to use as a DRO on my 15" thicknesser. They auto-off after 5 mins, but will auto-on again, remembering the previous measurement so should work a treat. When (if) I finally find the time to do the mod, I'll post the results.
Cheers,
Mick
