When I went to Tassie a couple of years ago, I got stuck in a traffic jam a the lights. 3 cars going either way.
The GPS worked for 99% of out trip, I had a back up street directory for the 1%.Pat

Oh YEAH? When I was in Adelaide in 2004, I drove down King William St at 5pm (weekday) and got caught at Adelaide's set of lights. There was a total of five cars (true story).
So beat that!

Ultimately a GPS is only as good as the mapping software it is supplied with. The Aldi GPS units use Whereis (Telstra) maps. I bought a 5" Aldi GPS a few months ago, very happy with it, used it on a couple of interstate trips and it hasn't let me down.
We live in the country and our road was never on Whereis maps, either on the computer or on GPS units, but this Aldi unit has the 2011 version software and I was pleasantly surprised to see that our road is on there, nice to know we actually exist.
Now if only Telstra would put our name and number in the telephone book I would be really happy. Have been battling them for 10 years, each year they promise to correct that, each year the haven't so far

What? You want us to all start ringing you up?
A gag I like to play on mates sometimes is to ring their landline and then, just a few seconds later, ring their mobile as well. Then hang up the land line when I figure they are just about to pick it up, talk to them on the mobile, and then ring the landline back. With friends like me......

Here's what NOT to buy at Aldi - the Fission branded 8 gigabyte USB keys - they are nothing but a problem waiting to eat your data!
The tagline on them is "Connect to Freedom"...well, data certainly is free on them - free to go anywhere!
A quick google for 'Fission 8 gig problem' gave a number of sites expressing disgust at how poor these USB keys were - if you get a working one (ie not crap right out of the packet) it must be the odd one out in the box! (H2testw gave a 7.1 gig loss of data during a test write!)

I must be a lucky duck then (so far at least). All I've done so far is write a few files to one, and haven't tried to open it back yet. Will try that now. Interestingly, they are identical to another 2gb one that I have which has been good.

It seems that they report a larger size than the actual memory on the chip. The discrepancy won't be noticed until you exceed this maximum size and it starts to randomly overwrite existing data. Try the H2testw software for a full test.

I see. Thanks MS. I try never to go too close to the limit anyway (except with jokes).

Shop vacs still available at Bundoora Aldi
Hello all. I just got back from Aldi in Bundoora, Victoria, and they have 14 shop vacs still on the floor, as well as the twin cyclone vacs that some have talked about. (Which for the price, is very very good.)
In case anyone still wanted one.
If anyone wants me to reserve one for them, let me know. This Aldi is literally 2 mins from my work place.
Have a great day everyone.

Got my Aldi GPS (Go Cruise 4803) today and I'm impressed. It identified my location down to the lot number with the dirt road and recent speed limit sign posting also shown.
Thanks to Big Shed for putting me onto the Aldi unit at the Caravan and Camping Show - and to Wheelinaround for organising one for me. Now I just need a reason to go somewhere to test it.Geoff

What are the chances of the router they're advertising being any good?
I've been thinking that a router might be my next purchase, but I don't know that I'd use one enough to justify the cost. For $50, if it even lasts a year of infrequent use its probably a good deal.
Are Aldi power tools usually any good? I haven't seen them before.

Hey chook.
I grabbed an Aldi "Taurus" brand recopricating saw 2 years ago for $79.00.
Since then, I have renovated a house with it, pruned trees with it, built a 40 meter long fence with it, and chopped up firewood with it!!!
Still going strong!!!
Aldi tools are typical made in china items. Noisy. Featureless. Gutless. BUT good value for money.
If you want a quiet tool, with lots of features, and powerful, buy a Festool for an extra $750!!!
For me, I will be buying the router and router stand. For what I do, that will be more than ample.
Have a good one. There is no dark side of the moon really.
