Default ANZAC day 25th April 2007

    For our fallen comrades
and all those who made the supreme sacrifice
that we may live freely in the greatest country in the world Australia.

    LEST WE FORGET

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

    Lest we forget.

And a salute to Padre Arthur Ernest White for those words & the Anzac Day Dawn Service tradition.

PS. Opps, they are actually a Laurence Binyon quote that he used.

We owe them a debt we'll never be able to repay.

They won't fight wars like WW1 or WW2 again, thankfully.

My Dad was on the Hobart (WW2) when it got torpedoed in the Coral Sea. They knocked out the engines and so the ship just sat there, for the rest of the night on a calm sea, full moon, and they waited for the next torpedo. He was scarred stiff but luckily, it never came.
They were towed safely back to port the next day.

He said he could still hear the cries of his shipmates as they closed all the water tight bulkheads. Those on the wrong side of the door drowned.

He also missed the Canberra by a day when it sailed early. He should have been on it. It never came back.

My generation have missed all that. I hope future genereations are as lucky.

My grandfather was captured in France and spent 3yrs as a pow in Germany.

He died at 70yrs of age of TB contracted in the German mines.

As a pow he tried to keep a diary but there is not much in it. One entry always chokes me up. "Today, same as yesterday and the day before and the day before and the day before."

Rest in peace you old bugger.

We start Anzac Day at 1.30am when Brie and her fellow cadets attend the memorial in Australind and stand vigil for the dawn service which we will return for at 5am

As a fellow that missed all the wars by virtue of either not being around yet or in the case of Vietnam being to young to enlist and for the Iraq farce being too old Ive not missed a dawn service in some years I think the last was about 3 years ago when Cliff our neighbor and severely injured Vietnam vet passed on which we spent with his family.

I try to install in all the kids the debt we this generation and every generation to follow owes to the bravest of the brave of our young men and women those who went and never returned and those who went and returned forever different people

May they stand tall forever in the minds and hearts of all Australians and New Zealanders.

Dad was RNZAF - trained in Canada and posted to England just before the end of the European War. He figured he was very fortunate to have missed the early stages. We do take it for granted that the boys just went off and did what they had to. Thanks for the thread Neil

I have the original diary my grandfather kept whilst he served in Northern France during WWI. It is an interesting read, and if I remember I'll post up the transcript one day. One thing that does stand out was the day that his company beat the Hauraki regiment 7:0 in a game of rugby. His entry was "great day, beat Hauraki 7:0"

Eventually he was shot in the shoulder when he went over the top one day. He writes that he thought we was a goner but him and another bloke found a little dog in all the smoke and followed it out to safety.

    Cheers
There was a young boy called Wyatt
    Who was awfully quiet
    And then one day
    He faded away
    Because he overused White
