Given that the discussion has pointed to Aussie sense of humour and subtlety as vital, it might be in order to recall the story of the Aussie tourist in Paris who wanted to understand the meaning of the French expression "savoir faire".
So, over a couple of drinks, one local tried to explain: "Well, say that a man comes home, opens the door of his bedroom and finds his wife with another man, if he just closes the door and goes away he displays "savoir faire".
Another local thinks a bit, then says: "Yes, but not quite. If that man in closing the door says "Do excuse me, please continue", that is "savoir faire".
At that point a third chimes in: "Ah, but if after that the man in the room actually manages to continue, THAT is "savoir faire"!
Now, is this a muse or amuse, Neil?

Paris - the only city in the world where I got punched in the face by someone passing by, for speaking in English to my girlfriend.

Then there are the ones who make an inocent remark that's taken the wrong way by someone with a thin skin or no sense of humour and all of a sudden they start getting abusive pm's and emails, harassed on the open forums, stalked, etc.
Believe me it happens and often. You lot just don't see most of it because it's dealt with in the back room as swiftly as possible.
So, what would you have the inocent party do in this instance?
Personally I'd rather have them come to me or one of the other mods or administrators, with proof, and ask for help. No one should ever feel intimidated or threatened on the forums. For goodness sake, it's a place to come and learn, help, enjoy, relax and be a part of a broader friendly community.
We don't come here to be abused or threatened. Nor do most of us want to see a full scale battle going on between members. A difference of opinion is fine and only to be expected from time to time. A robust discussion (as Ron Dunn said) is also fine, but abuse, harassment and all that goes with it, is another thing all together and just not on. The Admin team won't tolerate it and neither should any of you.

In most instances the people who are being set upon never contact us. It's almost always picked up by one of the Admin team, or reported by another member because they don't like the situation.as a matter of fact i would mutch prefer that they insult me back
You're an idiot and don't know what you're talking about. Hows that Carl? Feeling better now? Attachment 81384Its almost like being in the school playground again.
When I went to school you had your blue and that was that, it was over and done with. Now there is no such thing, you have your blue and they'll hunt you down after school, beat you up time and again, harass you to within an inch of your sanity, maybe even stab or shoot you and in some instances are the cause of young suicides.
That's not the kind of school yard we want here.
The members and casual users don't see the crap that we delete daily, the abusive and sometimes hateful emails, or any of the other garbage we need to deal with and are expected to put up with, just to keep these forums as one of the best places on the www for woodworkers.Very few of you have any idea what so ever, as to what goes on behind the scenes here to keep this monster running smoothly.
